I am looking at purchasing a 4000/40 in the near future but have
become concerned by an increasing number of comments about performance
problems especially with read to memory.
Can anyone give me some insight into this area.
Secondly how does a 1200 with a 50mhz 68030 and 68882 compare to the
4000/40.

I've got a 1200 in that config – it's about 1/2 integer, 2/3 graphics, 1/4
fp. General numbers. But 4000s can be GREATLY sped up by improved memory
schemes – with replacement CPU cards and such. And there's also a
rumoured 40MHz 4000 on the way from C=.

Sorry, 4000 faster, all around. And with a replacement CPU card that
provides either better memory management, a faster chip, or both, you can
REALLY realize a speed advantage. On the other hand, my 1200 setup would
be maybe $1500 today, whereas CEI's 4000 packages are MUCH more.

There's the Warp Board, which combines an optional faster 040 (or you can
use your 25MHz chip) with, I think, memory and a good SCSI2 controller.
No idea of the price. There's the XCalibur, same deal on the CPU,
supposedly BLAZING memory scheme, but no SCSI2. And there's another one
at least. As to which one's the best deal, I don't know.
