Thanks for remembering this thread – 2 1/2 months old!
I agree 32megs isn't enough and I should have more. But while I'm at it, a
Pentium or PowerPC chip would help, as well as a hardware renderer. Maybe 3DS
will incorporate a feature similar to the SoftImage system, using gurard real
time hardware rendering. THAT would be cool!
Has there been talk about posting 3DS from DOS, or optimizing for these more
powerful chips?

Wait till you see our new IPAS routines. Does 42,000 Gouraud-shaded polygons
per second (on a Pentium) sound good to you?

There you go again, whetting our appetite for these tasty morsels. So, are we
looking at about a week? And am I first in line?
The catalog stuff is still at the printer, and it's scheduled to be back from
the press sometime next week (we're running about a week behind schedule on
that, since it was supposed to be back tomorrow).
The documentation is going to the pre-press guy tomorrow, and hopefully that'll
take less than two weeks, which puts us at about May 3rd to get back from the
press (but then the manuals have to get FedExp'd to Schreiber Inst, which'll
take another day or so).
All-in-all, it looks like, if _everything_ goes smoothly from here on out,
we'll be shipping by the end of that first week of May. The code is all doing
fine, so we're hardcopy-bound at this point.

Only 42,000? I'll bet you could do better 🙂
Just kidding! That sounds AWESOME!! Very, very cool! Can you give more
specifics on how it'll work? That's pretty close to real-time 🙂 You're giving
SoftImage a run for their money (a lot of it, in comparison). Will you
incorporate it into the editor or Keyframer screens, similar to SoftImage, or
is that encroaching on copyright probs?
That sounds so cool!! I'd love details, if possible.

There'll be a working demo up here on the system by the end of next week, so
you can play with it yourself. Obviously, at 42K shaded polys per second, you
can move fairly complex objects pretty quickly. Of course, since these are
IPAS routines, they live outside of the ed/kf.

No need to… Gouraud shows you everything you need, including what
all the smoothing groups are doing. (as if you didn't know that 🙂
As Gary mentioned, IPAS3 makes it possible to do real-time previews. Naturally
the PC is not as powerful a 3D display device as an SGI with 3D display
hardware, but this should be SUPER OUTRAGEOUSLY COOL, nevertheless <g>.
