Hey All…..
I am trying to decide whether to attempt to market rendered DXF animation to
architecs and engineering firms. Does anyone have any experience in that. I
guess my main condern would be doing a couple of projects and then having them
go out and buy everything and cut me out of the picture. Does anybody make
money doing this type of service stuff? Sure I could be a dealer or consultant
and help them setup, but up here in Montana you can count the number of these
businesses on two hands (and maybe some toes).
Give me some input.

The answer to this is to make yourself a "Value Added." 3DS is not a
simple program to use or learn, so you have a head start in that
department. What I would do is try to sell the service and then in
the process of fulfilling the client's needs find out what else you
can do for them, and do it the best you can. If in your efforts they
see an opportunity to do things more economically with an internal
department you should be in a position to act as a consultant and
charge for the time and effort. If they end up eliminating you try
someone or something else.
The bottom line is if you make the effort, you will most likely reap
the benefits. Something like, "If you build it, They will come." <G>

Thanks Fred. Good comments. I think one thing I have learned in the
software biz is patience. It always frustrates me when a client looks
at my stuff and my bill and says "hey we can do that!". 1-2 months
later they find out "hey this ain't so easy?!?". I suppose this will
never change. My major deficit is my lack of art and graphic
background. Kind of like the poor kid who is a wizard in programming,
but no degree. Always has this complex he is not as good as the grad.
3DS is unique in that not many of the artists I know would ever
tackle it. It is amazing to consider what we all have sitting in our
PC and the difficulty of setup alone.
I cannot imagine some of my customers trying to even plug a keyboard
in let alone a Targa (w/ tuning). But God willing I am sure that I
will pick up neato projects to work on. I have had several great ones
that have been fun. But my Foxpro stuff is still the bread & butter.
