I think it has better pin-registration than the Oxberrys', at a fraction of the cost. I 've been able to do some really beautiful work with it. We should get together sometime so I can show you the tests. I sometimes feel like a solitary voice in the wilderness for having invested in the Vista format. But I bet you'd agree that, right now, it's the best way to affordably produce computer animation that's truly theatrical-release quality. BTW, I'm hoping to work film into future 3D Art Forum presentations. I'd like to move this group toward showing `premieres' of new CG work, and the like. Sort of as a humble alternative to mainstream movie venues. That's why we've moved the group away from the` community room' approach to a more `theatrical' venue. We could run 4-perf 35mm motion pictures without much difficulty right now at the Gene Autry. But that space is already feeling a bit claustrophobic. Since no other independent animators have come forward with standard 4-perf. film, and both you and I are doing Vista (which is much more impressive), perhaps I should begin exploring some venues which can show that format. The only places in town I know of that have Vista projectors are DreamQuest and the now defunct Apogee. I saw the projectors at both facilities, when they were running my tests, and they looked very unwieldy. Do you have any other ideas on this? A place somewhere near Hollywood, Burbank, N. Hollywood would be nice. Coincidentally, I also spent several years working with optical printers, but in school. I've never like video much. Before CG came on the scene, optical compositing seemed like the natural first step toward doing some FX work I had in mind. Although I'm committed now to doing all this work digitally, I still prefer final output that's `analog', it's just more pleasing to my eye. Perhaps when HD projection systems come along, I'll change my tune. 🙂 -Tim
