Is there any way for 3D Studio rendering in the background when running under OS/2 ? Is this possible in any video modes ? Thanks .

<<Is there any way for 3D Studio rendering in the background when running under OS/2 ?>> Yes, there are a number of people who use OS/2 in this fashion. If you do a keyword search on OS/2 you will find a few files in the library that can help you get started. <<Is this possible in any video modes ?>> Do you mean video driver or render selection? For Video drivers, there are some cards that have better success under OS/2 than others. Usually, you will want a card that has a specific driver for OS/2. For within 3DS, you will want to render to a NULL device if you are planning on rendering in the background.

Thanks for your reply, Brian. I hope find some help in the library. ..Antonio Moreno

Try running 3DS in 16-color mode. If you can switch it into a window without getting a warning message, you have found a compatible mode. Create a 3DS.SET file using that mode, and then create an OS/2 WPS object that starts 3DS in slave mode using that 3DS.SET file. Whenever you want to do background rendering, use your "foreground" version of 3DS to render to the "network." When you start the "background" copy of 3DS, it'll render the jobs sent to the network, while you go off and do other things. If you really want to be fancy, you can run 2 copies of 3DS on the same machine – one in foreground, doing new models, the other in background doing rendering. It's extreme, but I have done it.

Thanks for your reply. The only compatible mode I found is 320×200 .I rendered in the background (without create the slave version) but only at that resolution.I would like rendering at 640×480 , but I don't find a compatible mode at this resolution. ::Antonio Moreno

Antonio, << I would like rendering at 640×480 , but I don't find a compatible mode at this resolution. >> If you are rendering while doing other things in OS/2 and don't care to see the actual rendering, configure the vibrant driver for null. Mark

The resolution you pick for your slave 3DS.SET does not affect the resolutions you can render in. I have heard about a VIBRANT driver that runs in TEXT mode, which means it'll run great in the background, but I haven't found it. — Doug Azzarito
