#Render question
4 messages in this thread
I just was a demo a couple of nights ago of Animation Master. At this
demo, they displayed a rather remarkable ability to render a
spline-based model at break-neck speed.. as they claim, "it will
render as fast as I can hit the return key". This was a model of a
human head. Is this a function common with spline based modelers, the
speed thing I mean? I believe the system he was demo-ing on had 32
meg of RAM. Well, that is how much I have and it takes about 15 to
20 seconds to render a similar sized polygonal object. What gives.
Just curious, I really don't know the difference between the
computation of spline based as opposed to polygonal. Thanks.
I think he may have been exaggerating a bit when he said that, or
didn't quite understand what you were asking. When he was doing fast
previews of "Bob", it took about as long as the fast preview in 3ds4,
from what I saw. The preview was phong based, too. You will remember
he never ray-traced anything during the demo. Still, the programs
did have some cool features. It was nice to see a different
perspective on 3d animation.
What did you think of the meeting in general? I am always looking for
feedback/suggestions on them.

I thought the meeting was very informative, and I appreciate the
opportunity to see the new IPAS releases, err, Plug-ins too. I am
over 120 miles away from where you guys meet, so I probably won't be
making too may trips, but I will be watching for the times you have
guest demo's. Is there a membership fee for the support group? If
so, I'll have a check the next meeting I attend. Thanks for having
these meetings, they are a great help.

There is a voluntary $25/year membership fee that lets you in on the
raffles when we have them. In the past we have given away IPAS
routines, books on 3d studio, things of that nature. Most of them
have been worth some big bucks.
The room and refreshments are free, courtesy of my employer, so our expenses
are small. About the only thing we spend money on is postage for the monthly
mailing.
I try to make them as interesting as possible, but I am always looking at ways
to keep them worth coming to.
