I just uploaded a file in the library describing the new Perception Video Recorder that will be shown at NAB next week. As almost all the staff will be there, getting questions asked will be tough until we return. I will check in a couple of times during next week and try to answer a few questions here. Dave, What is the PAR "AV upgrade" I just read about? Alec Jason

It is a chip that will export a decimated ( read postage stamp size ) image to put into multimedia (AVI – MCI) programs that edit or do special effects. This chip used to be sold only by the Razor guy's and is now available directly. New boards shipping now have them stock. Dave

David: PMJI, but are you saying that the latest stock of IDE PAR's have the chip already installed, or do you mean the new SCSI version? Thanks, -Scott

Scott: >> PMJI, but are you saying that the latest stock of IDE PAR's have the chip >> already installed, or do you mean the new SCSI version? The IDE's have been shipping with the decimation chip since earlier this year. Greg Pyros

Thanks, Greg! So there's really no way a dealer can justify charging additional for the chip when buying the board now, right? Has a price been announced for Perception yet?

The PAR boards have the chip, not Perception.

Yes, I just read the press release. Sounds almost too good to be true, doesn't it? Only question is…How much will this monster cost? Thanks, -Scott

The is now hardware update but PC PAR users will get free of charge the NT software to run there exsisting PARs. Dave

Does this mean that my current PAR/TBCIV will run the same software ??? Will I be able to capture video and audio under NT with my current hardware?? Will there be a hardware upgrade path ?? Oh so many questions for a current PAR TBCIV user.. Thanks in advance Bob from The Design Shop..

Yes, we will be releasing NT software in the next couple of weeks for the PAR to run NT. This will be a FREE upgrade available here and on the DPS BBS. Dave

David, >> US$1995 for the Perception board and US$999 for the capture board. << wow! Thanks very much Dave and DPS – that's a great price for something with those specs. I'll be getting one for my dept. as soon as they ship (June or so).

Martin, I just got back from NAB and saw the Perception.. My order is already in. The quality is fantastic. No competition from the Plum here. There is supposed to be some basic windows 3.1 drivers to support this product until 3DSr5. This looks like the best product/price performace for all of the stuff I saw at NAB. Cheers, Tom

Tom, >> I just got back from NAB and saw the Perception.. My order is already in. The quality is fantastic. No competition from the Plum here. << good news. Pardon my ignorance, but what's the "Plum"?
#164436From: Thomas FlanneryApr 12, 1995 7:25 PM
Hi Martin, Plum is another video NLE card but it operates a little differently. It comes with a capture board, Adaptec SCSI board ant TB sound card. The demo at NAB was smoke and mirrors since they said that the software was not yet finished. The latest AV Video Mag has a big ad at p. 32 . I also looked at the new Play "Trinity" system, also smoke and mirrors. Both systems are ~$6K. Cheers Tom

Thanks for the report on the PVR, Tom. Mark

Dave, you'll knock em dead with this price! Guess I'd better get started switching my system over to NT and PCI now so I'm ready for the upgrade.

David, $1995!! That's a great price! What will become of the ISA PAR model? When will you have a new demo tape for the PVR? Thanks, Mark
#164326From: David WhiteApr 12, 1995 9:48 AM
Yes, we are assembling a new video tape for Siggraph. Please contact me directly for submission info. As far as the PAR being discontinued, it is not. It will still be sold and maintained as the current solution for those using DOS and areas in the world that use older technology like Europe that dont move quite as quickly as the US. Dave

Incredible! I'm glad I managed to hold out until now! When is the actual ship date? Thanks, -Scott
#164557From: Thomas FlanneryApr 13, 1995 9:53 AM
Scott, They said that the first units would ship in June. This is the same as my current deadline for my current project. Guess I'll just single frame in anticipation…. Tom
