#Targa+…resolution
5 messages in this thread
I would like to configure my Targa+ to display a higher resolution than
512×486…at least 640×480, or 800×600….more important however, I would
like to be able to do video capture (using Tips+) at the higher resolutions
for use in 3d Studio. Can someone help with this? Thanks in advance! Tag

for video capture you pretty well stuck with the ntsc res.(512×486 or
756×486) and thats 32 bit 16 bit for the targa 64+. 32 bit for 756×486 if
your running an atvista 4meg. and of course thats interlaced. if just want
to display your targa images at higher res then use tmode to set up your
targa to go as high as 1024x768x16 non-interlaced. but you will not be able
to record to ntsc at that level, i'm getting very good results with my
targa 64 at 512x486x32 bit , why the need for higher res?

if you need higher res maps in 3ds you might try this . first capture the
scene you want in tips at 512x486x32 then save it as a xxxxxx.win . then
bring it back in after you have reset the targa to a higher res mode say
1024×768 then you could paste the image in the upper left of the screen
then keep bringing it into tips but each time flip the image so that its
sides match the previous image. this should take 4 win files of the first
saved image. what you get is a high res map that is good for reflection
maping on objects.
after you do this then go back into 3ds and load the original targa image
you captured in the back ground and create a sphere then create a texture
with the new high res map and apply it to the sphere you don't need to map
it on the sphere because its a reflection map. but make sure that when you
create the texture you use 100 per shinyness and specular is also white.
what you get is a very realistic looking chrome ball and if you animate the
camera around it it will be a very nice effect. you could of also done this
to the sphere with the original image also because its a sphere and
reflection mapping works best with round objects. but if you have an object
that is not round the high rez one will work well compared to the original
on.
anyway i'm wearing out my keyboard…. hope this helps…

Teodor,
Depends on what model Targa+ you have. The Targa+ 16/32 and 64 will
capture up to 756x486x16-bit. Use the TMODE utility to set the mode, and
run TIPS+ (which supports all the resolutions).

Is your camera's resolution greater than 512 lines horizontal?
If it isn't, then the sharpness of your grabs won't improve when you
capture at 640 x 480 or 756 x 486. The physical dimensions of the image
grab in pixels will be greater though.
