Actually, I'm planning a calendar called "The Men of 3D Studio" featuring all
my favorite guys lounging around in gym/shower gear. You know, towels, exercise
shorts and the like. And Steven Elliot will be January.
I would do a "Women of 3D Studio" calendar except all we have is January
through March (me, you and Nancy Fulton).

NOT! <G> Though hubby Joe and I are "centerfold" this month in the quilt
magazine "American Patchwork and Quilting" with our computer generated quilt
patterns. Big Smile! Our 15 minutes of fame. We use ACAD R12 to design and now
that I have access to 3DS will be on the learning curve to see what that can do
for quilts.
Best pin prick so far in our bubble of fame is a friend's child who looked at
the pictures and said "but you don't look that old". !

Congratulations on your fame! And remember that to a child, 21 is "old".
I've experimented a little with fabrics in 3DS. For a magazine article I wanted
to reproduce the loose weave on a skirt of mine, so I inspected the skirt for
about an hour and came up with a repeating bump map for 3DS. Then I made a grid
and put a little wave through it. Unfortunately when I used the weave on the
grid, I got big Moire patterns through it. I made the weave bigger to get rid
of the Moire but then it looked like a baby blanket. So I decided to do an
article on how to make a baby blanket rather than a skirt. <g>
Using 3DS for cloth is an area that's still new. A few people are experimenting
with clothing but I haven't seen much in the way of images yet. This is a great
opportunity for you to pave the way.

Have you ladies checked out Painter 3.0? I don't have it yet, but you are
supposed to be able to do "real" weaving and fabric design.
No I haven't checked out Painter 3.0. I blush to admit that I have
only the paint program in windows and several commercial quilt
programs that contain fabric and color ability. Most of my designs
are deliberately done in black line so that they don't influence the
quilter on color choice. so many folks look at what another has done
and just recreate it instead of doing their own coloration and fabric
choice. Preconceived idea if they see a design in color <G>
Ooooh! OK, I see … so your are a quilt _pattern_ designer; I
misunderstood. In that case it makes very good sense, and it's
rather nice to provide the strong framework, but leave room for
individualization. I bet you still would enjoy Fractal, though.

I have a much more modest proposal in mind. Do you know "My Fair Lady",
and Elsa's song "Wouldn't It Be Loverly"… roughly …. "all I want is
a room
somewhere, far away from the cold night air, with one enormous chair, oh
wouldn't it be loverly " it continues about "lots of chocolate for me to
eat" (a crucial component, from my perspective!), warm fire crackling…
etc…ell, if you do a great 2D quilt texture map, I promise to model a
comfy
overstuffed chair, crackling fire (flame and vapor IPASes, of course),
and the chocolate (of course). I think this would be a nifty group
project, of which a quilt to
wrap up in would obviously be an integral component.
Now what would Michelle bring ….. her laptop? The bearskin rug???

Don't bother with the gym. We computer chicks like our guys as is. If you don't
have that big butt from sitting in front of the computer, well, you're not a
REAL user, are you?

P.S. — Nice "Wanted" poster. David was handing them out to a bunch of
Australian guys at the Asia/Pacific conference a couple of weeks ago. Seriously
— I was impressed. Good advertising.
The "Wanted" poster was actually masterminded, written and printed by the
intrepid publisher of Multi-CAD. I didn't even know about it until she faxed me
the fait accompli. It's been good for generating work for me, so I've gotten
over the initial embarassment.
