#NAB Report!
20 messages in this thread
Well, this may not be exactly "on your desk"<g>, but let me take this
opportunity to make a little "NAB Report" for anyone who's interested,
here on CIS.
Just got in this afternoon from a quick two-day visit to Vegas and
NAB95. Notable forum attendees included PaulL, GregP, MikeM, WadeS,
PhilM, and probably others whom I am forgeting (please go easy on me)
due to post-Vegas frazzle syndrome!
The Adesk booth (once I found it in a dark corner :-() was being
manned by famous X-Desker JamieC. among others. Jamie was showing 3DS
to folks who seemed very interested by the latest 3DS stuff. Right
next door, SGI "partners" Alias and Wavefront were showing their
wares, with no real sign of any new "togetherness", keeping with what
is being said by the SGI suits who have commented on the recent move.
It was great to see Brick Eksten and Dave White showing off the new
SCSI-based PVR (Perception Video Recorder) from a decidedly larger
(and more "interestingly" staffed — who *was* that Candy person??)
DPS booth. Keeping with their philosophy of bringing great-looking
video animation to the masses for a reasonable price, this PCI-based
seemingly lossless solution looked brilliant, and all for the same
price as the PAR! Able to command 7 SCSI devices (9 GIGs apiece!) at
a compression ratio of 3:1 (depending on the frame characteristics
and software settings), the PVR can be a real NLE workhorse for a
fraction of the cost of systems that are mis-guided enough to depend
on a EISA bus for throughput! The Windows software seemed to perform
flawlessly, and, of course, the audio support is complete with full
time-code support. I only wished they had used more 3DS animation to
show it off, though. LightWave's Low (super-sampled) A-A settings
only ruined the edges and scintilated the texture maps so
artifact-hunting wasn't anywhere near as much fun as it should have
been. I did *not* see any artifacts, however. I'm hoping to secure a
board soon and an in-depth article in 3DA should be forthcoming.
Back on the 3DS front, DavidA, LaVinaL. and the rest of the Digimation
crew had a small but extremely exciting booth on the Multimedia
floor. David was showing the NEW Bones Pro (complete with exclusion
for errant vertice influence, G-shading, etc.) along with a great,
new Smooth interface. Also there was a positively brilliant lens and
*Refraction* (Yup, you heard right!) routine from Alec and the boys
from Moscow that had us drooling, along with a preview of the
Landscape Generator that has TONS of promise. Killer explosions and
other fractal-based fun is also coming from the Digimation camp,
making for an extremely exciting near-future from our friends in LA!
The Adesk press-party/blow-out (*open bar!!!* and, yes, a whole bottle
of JD!) was lots of fun. JoeF, BobB, KevinB, and other Adesker's
looked like they were having great fun hob-nobbing about with
who-knows-who while DavidA showed his stuff on one machine, while
KiethS from Schreiber showed Key Factory, a very cool
collision-detection routine on another.
A very interesting observation I had was that LightWave NT was being
shown at no less than *4* booths. Micro/Soft/Image had it (evidently
entry-level positioned with their own 3D stuff to come), Nu-Tek, of
course, and there were a couple of other appearances.
All-in-all, it was a great time and VERY interesting. If NAB was this
good, Siggraph should be absolutely KILLER!
See ya there, and, as always, thanks for listening,
-Alan
Thanks for taking the time for a review. How much of the show was
computer graphics related vs. straight broadcast video? I think the
fact that Autodesk is even at NAB is a great sign!
You're very welcome, Ted.
Hmmm, I don't know that I could make a guess percentage-wise, but let's just
say that CG was pretty much everywhere, and it's growing every year. As you
might guess, NLE was bigger than ever as it is getting to the affordable/great
quality level very quickly now.
All I can say is that Siggraph is gonna be quite a time.
-Alan
Alan
I've never been to NAB, because of it heavy "broadcast"<G> subject matter, but
it looks like it may be a show to add in the future.
A friend of mine was there, determined to get to the bottom of which NLE
system is best in the $30K range and was prepared to lay down his Shekels.
Haven't talked to him yet, but it sounds as if he just might have more choices.
On it goes?/\

Ted,

He should really take a look at the Fast DPR system. Its a hybrid and with a
complete system (with plenty HDD) would be definitely under 30k.

Hey Ang,
I was just talking to my friend yesterday morning and he has pretty much
decided on the Fast system, both for the price/performance and the fact that it
integrates well with his Alladin setup. Thanks for the input.
Good to see you back on the surface<g>.

Well its been a long struggle to get back to the point where I have the time to
contribute. The really pusher for me is that I now am using a Pentium 90
notebook as my main system and with that I can do this stuff in the living room
in the evening.
Good to see your still around as well.

Ted:

I think your friend is on the right track, the FAST and Aladdin are a good
combination, and definitely within his price range!
The other one I'd take a look at would be the Sony system, everything built in
(includes the computer!) and their DFS-500 effects box to boot!
There is enough CGI at the show to make it a must for animators, too!

I'll ask if he's seen the Sony, thanks.
I'm giving up the AEC show, so might just add NAB next year if the cash flow
allows it.
Did you get snow, last night??<BG>

Alan,
great report mate. Glad to hear the PVR is looking so cool. 3:1 compression
should be pretty lossless and at that price it's the deal of the year. I wish I
could have been there 🙁 but we're still working like crazy to get this job out
the door.
Digimation sounds like it has some killer new routines and Schreiber, too.
>> while KiethS from Schreiber showed Key Factory, a very cool
collision-detection routine on another. <<
I have Key Factory and I would describe it as a full blown physics package.
Collision detection is just a small part of that. <g>.
Hope to see you seen. I have the holiday weekend off – wanna get together?
We wished you were there too, Martin.
Whoa!, you've got a weekend off??!!<g> I'll give ya a call…

Hey, as the king of the IPAS buyers, I want ALL this stuff. Any word from the
D-men on what will be available and when?
Give DaveA a shout directly, Mike, and I'm sure he can give you a pretty good
idea of when these things will be available.
-Alan
Alan,
Did you see Danny Mercurio's Spline Modeling IPAS at the Digimation
booth? He said it might be there. Also, do you know anyone who has mastered
writing particle programs using the KUB script extensions?
I want to do some naturalistic liquid sprays, sort of like a squirting
blob that turns into spray mist at the end of its travel. (bombardeer beetle
spray or Llama spit (G) )
Sanford
Hi Sanford,
Nope, didn't see Danny's modeler, nor do I know of anyone (save MartinD
himself) who could give you a hand with the Script stuff. Sorry.
He-he, you crack me up with this naturalistic stuff.<g> Hmmm, sounds like a
job for Metaballs with a little material morphing and compositing, maybe?
-Alan
Alan,
Metaballs…..it might be good for spit. I havn't seen the new
version. The one I tried at Metrolight ended up looking like plastic no matter
what material you applied to it.
Most of the particle systems will not conform to a shape, so you can't
really make what you want to out of them. Still waiting for a particle system
creation tool kit—drag and drop would be good.
Sanford
>do you know anyone who has mastered writing particle programs using the KUB
>script extensions?
Post a note to Ed Kellerman in the Scripts section — he has done some very hot
particle stuff using KUB (so I've read — I'm afraid to download his example
flics or it will be one more IPAS I'll have to buy!).
Mike,
I will check out the Scripts section. Thanks for the lead on KUB.
