You obviously do not have a clue about running a business. A support
organization in a company is very expensive to operate. GVP clearly didn't
have the resources to keep their phone support going in the end. I assume you
hadn't noticed that GVP didn't have any new Amiga users to sell to for a year.
Also, how did GVP "abandon" the Amiga market? GVP offered acceleration and
hard disk controller products for every Amiga model (except the A1000), and a
lot of other innovative products, including good audio samplers, PhonePak,
video digitizers, genlocks, ImageFX, etc. No other Amiga developer supported
the market to this extent.
I would contend that you have it exactly backwards. Instead of abandoning the
market, they supported it too much, offering some neat products because they
could, not necessarily because there was a large enough market to support them.
GVP's employees had an incredible enthusiasm for the Amiga. Their downfall is
everyone's loss.
GVP did not do everything perfectly, but during their existence, they sold more
product than any Amiga developer, including NewTek.

You may not remember, but Dan posted here a few months ago with sour grapes
about purchasing a GVP display board that used 2 megs of ram in the autoconfig,
and not being able utilize all of his 8 megs of ram. Myself and others tried
to explain to him that this was a requirement for this board (as well as other
graphics and bridgeboards) but no Dan did not understand, it was all GVPs
fault. GVP even responded to his post in thier Vendors forum explaining in
detail why he lost the 2 megs and that he would need an accelorator that had
exteneded ram (I believe he is using one of those 28 mhz 68000 boards).
He made a purchase without researching the compatiblility of his set up and
would not own up to that responsibility, but blamed it all on someone else.
(like some many others do today) :-/

Yeah Steve tried to tell Dan … one of the too many on the board I guess.
GVP responded to my post and talked about products that I did not have in my
computer, made allusions to products and software without backing them up with
any form of bibliography. It took three posts to even get the guy to admit
that there were other products involved and finally, I got an answer from
someone who actually "understood" the need for RAM compatibility.
I did not however make it someone elses fault, I blamed my self for buying a
product that would not work in my setup. I now have a board, a OpalVision
board, it does what I wanted it to do, I get to keep my RAM, and the two Megs
of Video RAM, Steve … which, if I remember right, you said could not be done.
As for the lack of research, I am probably guilty there also, after all there
is only one way it can be done, right Steve?

I never said you couldn't keep the 8 megs of ram, and a video card, I said
you couldn't, with the video card you had (or most other modern video cards).
I did not mean to come across as a know it all, I had just followed your
post, and GVPs response, which you did not seem to understand. I thought I
would add my 2c to clarify things some, for you. But you still seemed to blame
the Spectrum. To further complicate matters you originally stated you had an
accelerator in your system (you did not state which kind), most modern
accelerators can and do address extended memory, it only came out later that
your accelerator was using an overclocked 68000 (which is unable to address
extended memory (as you well know by now)).
I am glad you have a configuiration now that works for you, but still
believe the flak you gave GVP was unnessasary, uncalled for, and overly harse.
As a company starts sinking (I know from 1st hand experience) it must make
decisions as how to cut cost. These decision may be unpopular, but to the
owners, something has to be cut back somewhere to save money. What would you
have suggested GVP do to save money? Ship defective and untested products?
Take orders (and $$$) for unfinished products? What would you have done?
As witnessed here, support may have suffered but it was one of the last
things to go. I admire GVPs stamina and good business ethics.

My beef all along was the lack of support outside of this forum (CIS) and I too
am sorry to see them fail … almost no one enjoys calamities because when they
do, it generally falls on them as well.
