Michael, By private message, David means through CompuServe's EMAIL (Electronic mail) system, since private messages are not enabled on this forum, except to the *SYSOP. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Kevin: You sent the message about private messages to me instead of to Michael. Besides, if you send something marked as private while here in this forum, it simply rolls over to Email anyway. David

David, Must be related to new forum software, then. I'd previously seen a few messages that had been intneded to be private that hit the forum. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Kevin: I've been sending "private" messages on Autodesk forums for years. I mark it as private using TAPCIS, which just adds a "post private" at the end of the dialog. When TAPCIS sends the message and the forum software sees the post private, it just sends it via Email. I suspect that's the way most forums that don't allow private messages work it. I suspect that private messages that ended up posted publicly ended up that way by accident, at the fault of the uploader. David PS. Of course, I could be wrong. It's happened before.

David, Since you are using TAPCIS. why not just use the 4 option when replying. This will send the message directly to mail from the board without all the checking.

Joe: Is that what 4 does? I thought it posted it as private and then the Forum software sent it to Email. Oops. I just went to send this message to you and found out that you were right. Now I don't remember which I was doing, 2 or 4. <sigh> David

Dave, The 4 option posts directly to Mail. To Forward a message from the board to Mail you need a flag in the forum and TAP don't give you flags….<grin>. The 2 option will post a private message, but if private messages aren't enabled (like in the Autodesk forums) it should give you the option of posting public or to mail.

Joe: I'm gonna do a little experiment. After I send this message to you publicly, I'm going to send you two other messages, one using option 2 in TAPCIS and one using option 4. Let's see what happens. David
