Title : Help if you've had problems running PPP to CIS Keywords: PPP AMITCP
HELP
This is a short text file to help if you've tried to get AmiTCP/IP and PPP 1.30
running, but haven't been able to. These are the settings I used.
Thanks, Steve!
I noticed three differences in my startnet file compared to yours:
1) Mine had the word "localhost" where yours had the ip address 127.0.0.1.
2) I had a line to start the inetd at the end, which you didn't have. I left
that in though, and it works anyway.
3) I had a line like "AmiTCP:bin/login -f cds" at the beginning, which I
commented out. This apparently is what makes it ask for a password, I believe
like the unix command of that name.
Before I changed localhost to 127.0.0.1, it looked like it connected to
CompuServe just fine, but AMosaic would complain that it couldn't connect to
the remote host.
I also changed my AmiTCP:db/resolv.conf file to put the DOMAIN line before the
NAMESERVER line, as in Steve (Ahlstrom)'s example. I have no idea if that
matters. I also commented out the second nameserver from this file. Again,
this may not matter.
I also changed my dialscript by adding an ECHO OFF line at the end. In case it
may help anyone, I was getting errors at the end when I had blank lines there.
Eliminating the blank lines got it to stop complaining. I added the ECHO OFF
line later.
Thanks again,
Clay
The word "localhost" is set up in your hosts file to map to the IP address
127.0.0.1. That's standard for TCP/IP. 127.0.0.1 always means your own
machine.
The inetd just lets other machines connect to yours. If you have a network at
home, you'd be able to access your Amiga from those machines. You can also
connect to your Amiga locally, but there's not much point to doing that. 🙂
Leaving the login stuff out was a last minute change. I tested it, and
everything seemed to be OK still.
Remember, just because AMosaic says it can't connect to a remote host, it
doesn't necessarily mean there is something wrong with your set up. The remote
host could be very busy, or even shut down.
I don't think the order of the DOMAIN and NAMESERVER lines in resolv.conf
matters.

Aha! My hosts file has the line "0.0.0.0 localhost". I don't remembeer
changing it, but it could have been my own fiddling.

Just to clarify further, 127.0.0.1 means the loopback interface on your own
machine. The other interfaces, whether they are the SLIP device, PPP device,
or Ethernet device, each have their own IP addresses. Since you have a dynamic
address assigned to you when you log into CIS, you can use 0.0.0.0 when it asks
for it. (See that PPPHLP.LHA I uploaded for further hints). The localhost
stuff in those files just tells the system to route the dynamically assigned IP
addressed packets to your own machine.
