#3.1 is pirate software

Hi Steve –
How are AmigaDOS users going to access this function? Currently we are told to
use 3.1, but that rev of AmigaDOS was released without Commodore approval and
is not authorized yet. It belongs to the new owner of Commodore, on April
20th.
I do understand that CEI is prepared to release 3.4 when they have a signed
contract, but until then 3.1 is pirate software.

I don't think 3.1 is pirated software (I have to admit that I'm no lawyer,
though <g>).
It has been released by VillageTronic of Germany with approval by Commodore
Germany, at least. I remember that there has been even support by Dr. Peter
Kittel, then still employed by C= Germany. If I recall it correctly he conceded
that it has been a premature release due to the circumstances of C= already
being in agony, but never pointed out to be something illegal.

In conversations with CEI, they believe it is the property of whomever buys the
Commodore assets. At that time, the new owners have the option to pursue their
ownership and any royalties due. I guess we'll find out within the next week or
so.
I had problems with it on an Amiga 2000 with a GVP 040, so I pulled it out and
returned it. The Toaster wouldn't boot up.

My A2000 @GVP 040 has been running flawlessly with OS 3.1. I don't have a
Toaster, however.

I have a similar setup and have no problems with OS 3.1. It _is_ a legal OS.

Do you mind me asking what revision your kickstart is? I upgraded to 3.1 a
couple of weeks ago, to KS 40.68 and WB 40.42. Now, although my '3000 works
pretty much fine, I have had problems with someprograms having garbage pixels
written to their screens. I'm wondering if the install program for the new WB
version didn't replace some libraries it should. I'm also a little worried
because I heard the latest '3000 KS3.1 was version 40.70.

I have KS version 40.63 for the A2000. It may very well be different for the
A3000. I don't have any of the symptoms you describe.

Who ever told you 3.1 was released without Commodore approval and is not
authorized is stupid or lying.
I'm sorry, but I'm sick of this. Commodore licensed lots of software before it
went under, and 3.1 was approved, authorized and licensed. You can by
legitimate 3.1 upgrade kits. There may be pirate kits out there, too, but that
hardly makes every kit a pirate kit.

Didn't mean to upset anyone, but my sources say that 3.1 was never released for
publication. It was provided, prerelease, to Villatronic for their video board
R&D and when Commodore went under they were stuck. Their board wouldn't work
without it, so they packaged 3.1 and sold it, and their board.
But, of course, all this will wash out with the new owner, come Thursday or
Friday anyway.

Your source is wrong, period. Commodore Germany licensed it to them.

That's bad news. 🙁 Escom doesn't seem to care much at all about the Amiga,
though I guess there's a chance they'd liscense it to interested party(ies),
and C= UK has ranged from solid to flakey in reports.
Basically, we're just surplus white lab mice in this situation. Nothing we can
do about it, and no one really cares what happens to us. At least we won't
have to wait much longer. I'd imagine that if there were any successful
objections filed we would have heard about them by now.

I've made my decisions based on, no more Amigas – ever, since about last
September. If any of the groups had the bucks to mount a serious effort,
with any realistic chance of succeeding, then they would have had the
bucks to make the liquidators sit up and take notice.
Either Escom is run by geniuses, or nobody else could figure out a way to
get things going.
In the meantime, I'm going shopping for a 24 bit display board for my
3000.
