#Perception Q's?

We just got rid of our PAR system and are going to get the Perception. I have a
few questions.
What resolution and aspect ratio should we render to now for frames we will
dump to the PVR when released?
Would it be better to get two 2GB drives or one 4GB drive? When editing video
would edits, pastes, and other operations be quicker with two drives?
Will the current version of Razor Pro work with the PVR?
Is it possible to hook a DAT directly to the PVR for backups? This may be
quicker than going over the PCI bus, or am I wrong? Right now backups from the
PAR -> DOS/DAT takes so long, I'm hoping the PVR is quicker. That is one of the
only complaints I have about the PAR, but that is the fault of ISA not DPS.
I assume most answers to these questions may be speculation.

The PVR is not going to be released until June/July 1995, sounds like you let
your PAR go a little to soon!!

–The video resolution is now standard CCIR-601 (720×480) aspect 1:1

–The compression of the PVR will be as little as 3:1, for example, a current
*.ani from the PAR that was 1 meg at a 10:1 compression will be approx. a 3 meg
file on the PVR, which means that a 1.7 gig drive now needs to be at least a 6
gig drive to accommodate the lower compression of the PVR. I think the the 9
gig Micropolis drives are going to get very popular (now available for around
$3,000)!!

–Yes, and a NT version should be ready by the time the PVR is released.

–If you will be using NT, the ExaByte drives are directly supported and I
think that some of the popular 4mm DAT drives should be also. The report is
that backups are very quick on NT.

PMJI, but I am really wished instead of backing up .ani files I had backed up
the
original .tga files so that I could re-compile on PVR when it is out. Well as

Brian,
That's a nice call, maybe from now on I'll/We'll probably start keeping those
"original TGA's around" for the PVR. That brings up a real good question, will
the old *.ANI's work on the new hardware?
Another note on backup's- TapeDisk is a great piece of software for copying
TGA's to tape. It looks like another drive on the system and you can copy all
of those TGA's off to the tape drive and then pick them up from the PAR/PVR
without uncompressing the files.

Better now while the gettin's good. That is only 1-2 months off.

We do have a HP C1533a 4GB DAT hooked to aa Adaptec 2940 under NT at the
moment. The DAT is quick under DOS/Windows (33MB/min) when doing a
backup/restore from C: drive, but from the PAR HD to DAT it is slow. I hope it
isn't that way under PVR and NT.
Hi I still have the PAR and Razor and after talking to DPS
and In Sync today maybe I can answer some questions

It really depends on the length of what you mix. If you think you will
have any down time if a drive goes out two drives might be better
to have. If you plan to expand and do stuff of greater length then 4GB
might be a better system..

720 x 480 I think ??

No.. The current version will not because it does not work under NT..
But from DPS it will be the only native file I/O editor.
