Has anybody got any ideas on how to create the textures like hair, fur, grass, porcupine spikes, and the like (sea anemones?) in 3D Studio? I don't think bump mapping will quite get the extremes in surface distortion. Craig

Growing hair is pretty specialized stuff. The folks in Charles Csuri's CS dept at Ohio State did some pretty cool demos last year at Siggraph. – G

Gary: Well, I >think< I could do it with a Renderman Shader if I wanted to get serious about C, and I suppose you could do it with a Fractal, but I don't have the time for either right now… and most people won't. I wonder if there is some way to provide a 'radicalization' factor to a bump map for 3DS 2.0? (a vertical displacement factor…). I don't think you can get this much difference from adjusting the percentage of the bump map. I mean, a black ball with white dots on it won't quite do it, right? With a vertical displacement factor you could begin to approach this type of texture, though…. you just wouldn't be able to >bend< the displacement… 3DS does Bart Simpson <g>. C#

You can't do displacements with scan-line renderers because they only look at a scanline at a time of the image. Only "tiling' renderers such as Rman (and DGS) can do displacements. The big negative is that they take an INCREDIBLY long time and are fraught with problems when you try to do more than a simple bump. Hair is almost impossible. This is why the folks at Ohio State had to write massively specialized code for it. – G

but ! dgs is incredably FAST with say 6 or more transputers connected. and i don't know of any other software that will run on transputers at dgs's price range. sherwood

What a hoot… and how much do "6 or 7 transputers" cost these days? – G

yes thats a $big$ problem. but whats worse yet is i have 32 megs in my machines and its paging to disk. memory i need more ….memory? or transputer? please check out the file arch1.gif i just uploaded and tell me what ya think it was done in 3ds. sherwood

Craig, Have you tried the exercise on page 7-43 of the 3DS users manual? James
