John,
someone was telling me that although 4x cd rom's are available, in most cases
the software (I'm not sure if he was talking about driver software or what)
isn't making use of the increased speed. This comment was in regard to the
PC/clone class machines. Have you heard anything to that effect? I didn't see
how this made sense being that a faster data transfer speed would be more
hardware dependant and it would seem that you'd get the benefits regardless of
the software you were running.

The thing is that the video on the drive is encoded for a certain data
rate–2x, mostly, and often 1x I guess–so the playback doesn't take advantage
of the higher data rates on 4x drives. When software vendors start selling
more titles with video encoded for a 4x data rate, then that concern will
slowly evaporate.

Will other types of software also have to be upgraded to take advantage of 4x
cd players. For instance, if you're using a non-video disk (lets say Visual
C++) will you get the 4x speed benefit?
