I'm concerned that I may have bitten off more than my wallet would like to
chew. Maybe someone here can enlighten me.
I'm currently running an Amiga 2000 with a flickerFixer and a multiscan
monitor. The monitor specs indicate it runs from 15.5 KHz to 36 KHz. The
flickerFixer specs list horizontal frequency of 31.5 KHz. Good so far.
I've ordered a Picasso 2 board, thinking things would be just fine with my
setup. Now I see in a review of the Picasso 2 board by
a.laughton@sheffield.ac.uk (A.B.Laughton) that I downloaded from Aminet under
the heading SPECIAL HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS the line:
"Monitor capable of 38KHz (minimum) to 64KHz (to show all modes)."
Does this mean that I need to be searching for a new monitor? Is anyone out
there running a Picasso 2 with a monitor that only goes up to 36 KHz?

Hi
I was running on a monitor that only goes up to 36KHz untill last week. It
works fine.
If you can do upgrade your monitor. It make's the Amiga seem like new. I
upgraded to a Iiyama Vision Master 17. It's fantastic. Do it if you can but as
I said it will work.
If you need any other help just ask.

In what way did the monitor you bought "make the Amiga seem like new". Of
course having a 17 monitor would be nice in and of itself, but I presume that
going up to 64Kz game you some monitor modes you could not use with your old
monitor. Can you give some more details as what the limitations on a 36KHz
monitor?

The big benefits for me are the non flickering whites which may seem silly but
if you are working in something like ProPage for a long period this makes a big
difference. I seem to get less eye strain now. I tried going back to my old
monitor to see how much of a difference there was. I was surprised how much of
a difference there was. All the colours are much more solid and brighter. This
was also due to fact the old monitor was 4 years old and has been used every
day. Also you can get a lot more on the screen but still be able to read it.
This means your not having to zoom in and out all the time.
I have absolutely no regrets upgrading at all. It makes everything much easier
on the eye.

Without going into the details about the how and why, follow this formula.
Suppose you want to use a 640×480 screen, and use a refresh rate of 70 Hz. What
KHz spec would your monitor need to be able to display this?
The formula is… horizontal lines x refresh rate x 1.05. In this case 480 x 70
x 1.05 = 35280, say 36 KHz.
Now, try this for a 1024×768 screen. You'd have 768 lines, want a refresh rate
of 70 Hz (non-interlaced) and so you'd need a monitor that can do (click click)
about 56 KHz.
Now you see how a 36 KHz monitor limits your possibilities. Don't worry about
the info, a Picasso II can do 640×480 at 70 Hz quite well, and you will not
blow up your monitor. With a Liyama 8617 monitor that has a 86 KHz spec, you
can do 640×480 at refresh rates well over 100 Hz.
Note that all of this has nothing to do with the number of colors. VGA moitors
are analog devices, the number of colors depends on your card. Some can do
24bit up to 800×600, others up to 1024×768. This depends on the VGA chip used,
the type and amount of memory etc.
