#AMouse Freezing

I recently started using a 2386sx Bridgeboard with a Cyrix accelerator chip. I
had some real thermal problems — BB locking up after a hour or so of use,
mysterious crashes, etc. Attaching a heat sink with attached fan seems to have
cured that problem. Now another problem I've never noticed before is annoying
me. I use the AMouse PC mouse emulator. If I use a single mouse and keep it
switched to the PC for a while, the mouse freezes on _both_ the BB and the
Amiga — I cannot switch the mouse back to the Amiga and the BB mouse pointer
is irretrieably stuck. I can unfreeze the Amiga mouse by sending the AMouse
task a break, but the PC mouse remains frozen. Anyone had any similar
experiences and (I hope!) an explanation or solution? Strangely enough, I I
plug in another Amiga mouse to the second mouse/joy port to use under AMouse
and do not swap a single mouse, the BB mouse freeze doesn't happen.

Sorry I can't give you much help on the frozen mouse but I understand you
added an Cyrix accelerator chip to your 2386 BB. If you don't mind my asking
which accelerator did you use? Is it a 486?? Where did you get it? I don't
mean to be so nosey but I have been wondering for some time now if that was
possible and have been thinking about spending the money to upgrade my board.
Do you think it sped things up enough to be worth it?
About the mouse. I found Amouse to not be the answer for alot of programs
because of a bug in it that causes it to reverse the x y axis on occasion.
Bloodnet and PCtools to name acouple. What I did was buy a serial mouse and
by adding a multi io board and running the PC mouse from the serial port, I
don't need to use Amouse. Of course if you are running short of 16 bit slots,
you can add two edge connectors to the two XT slots and have four PC slots
total. You may already have done that but it's worth mentioning.
Any info on the accelerator would be great.

You use the Cyrix accelerator that's appropriate to your processor. They have
different ones for 16 MHz, 25 MHz, etc. Many of my readers have used them and
are happy with them — the trick is to ventilate them properly, which can be a
small problem because Amiga slots are closer together. If possible, leave the
next slot empty. Some people add an extra internal fan. But above all, install
the heat sink with the recommended space.
About Amouse — that bug only happens when you use Graphic mode, so if you're
using text mode, you're OK.

Re: Cyrix overheat.
To correct the heat problem with the cyrix 486 clip on, I made a heat sink out
of alluminum flat stock. It runs verticaly (top to bottom) on the BB. It is
attached with GE Silicon.
I have a crowded machine, this arangement allows all slots to be filled.
The ONLY reliable way to run ANY cyrix SLC chip is with a fan directly on
on top of it.
It may run with a heat sink, but it will always run hot.
HOT = LOSE IN PERFORMANCE + RELIABLITY

Haven't noticed any problem here, it is a good size sink.
The heat sink that 'they' provide is a joke however.
First one burned up.
How does the cyrix chip compare to what you have been attaching to the BB?
I have considered sending you my board, but hard to justify the price.
To bad they didn't make a DX card.

Try check your IBM memory config. If your are using Memmaker, QEMM, etc.
try running 'clean' and see if it still happens.

Thanks for the suggestion — I'll give it a shot. I did use Memmaker to
rewrite config.sys and autoexec.bat.
BTW, can you send me email with your prices on the automatic monitor switch for
the 2386sx you've advertised recently? Thanks for your attention.
