Well, well, you people here teach me something new *every* day! I thought AT&T
had the most patents.

That's a stupid statement, Jerry. Someone doesn't have to be a good CEO in
order to criticize a CEO. By that rationale, no one except a few really
top-rate ball players could criticize Pete Rose if he had a bad day. By that
rationale… and on and on.

I admit I haven't completely followed this thread, but the last thing I'd seen
people saying was that Gerstner, while being an accomplised exec in the
cigarette business, had no computer experience, which is true. This may be a
good thing, but on balance it's more likely to be a bad thing, imo. Otoh,
since he's come on board, there's been a renewed focus on OS/2 at IBM, which is
a definite improvement. So who knows.

Someone popped up with "Gerstner is a SOAP seller" or something like that,
which had absolutely nothing to do with the topic and, moreover, is a big "so
what?" on my list. Stereotyping of that kind is just plain silly. Hell, what if
he sold newspapers as a kid? Or worked on a Good Humor truck during the
summers? So what? The guy may not have come from the computer industry, but his
mettle as a manager – which is what he was hired for – has been proven over
several decades.

Please don't misunderstand, I believed you the first time. Was a bit of an
eyebrow raiser when I read it, though. 😉

I don't think so. IBM has gaggles of patents. You think AT&T has more because
AT&T cares about making you think they have more. IBM seems to "hide" their
basic research, and unless you are a scientist reading the papers IBM
researchers publish in accademic journals or an engineer or lawyer reading new
patent issues, you'd never know how extensive IBM basic research is.
Everyone has heard of Bell Labs, how many people have heard of the Watson
Research Center? (And those who have heard of it probably think it has
something to do with Bell Labs, not with T.J. Watson. 🙂

I'm one of the few who know about T. J. Watson and IBMs gaggles of patents<G>.
IBM tends to hide alot of things. Just poor marketing in some cases. Like some
guys at work a couple weeks ago (who love Cisco) claimed that 'since IBM is so
new to TCP/IP' Bull, the entire NSFNet backbone is run on IBM routers!
Well…whatever…
