#Product Search

I am looking for two products: TAR for the PC, Amiga and SGI that allows Targa
files to be backed-up to DAT and Exabyte and read by any platformn running TAR.
Also, less appropriate for this forum, software that allows Amigas to use
PC-formatted external hard-drives. Thanks, Chris
Chris,
there is a pctar.exe file somewhere on CI$. You might have to do a search for
it. go "ibmff". I downloaded it a long time ago.
Thanks for the info. Asking around it does seem that TAR is pretty old– I
had heard it was being used by hi-end post houses to transfer particularly 3D
animation files…if anyone has any ideas on any multi platform readablility to
use DAT or Exabyte between different platfoThanks, Chris

that's correct. tar is the most frequently used software, but there are a few
different tape devices all a bit different. In order of rising expense: Exabyte
(8mm), DLT (?), Metrum (1/2 inch). DLT looks promising for both speed,
capacity, and cost-effectiveness – very good for animation at film resolutions.

An oldie, but still a goodie! 'tar' stands for 'tape archive', a UNIX program
that has a few ports to DOS. Look for GTAR, also, in addition to TAR and PCTAR
for PC versions.
We use tar to transfer from our UNIX systems to PCs, and also to our DDR
(Digital Disk Recorder) via an Exabyte 8505XL 8mm tape drive.
Exabytes are directly supported on both the Accom and Abekas DDRs, so it is one
of the easier ways to transfer files.
