>> I think that POv is a lot easier to use under memory restrictions like this, but you'll find the modelers available for it to be pretty restricted after using Imagine. << Sumpin's comin out that should support almost everything that POV 2.2 can do (including textures) . Can't say more though. >> POV-Ray has much better procedural textures than Imagine 2.0, but Imagine 3.x pretty much closes the gap and more, since so many of the textures are easily animated. << Pov has much more control over the intricate details of the textures, and can create some superb ( and IMO unbeatable) marble textures. Imagine has over a hundred different textures, but if you look closely at some of them they almost seem to be the same textures saved with different default settings. Don't think I'm knocking Imagine (I love it), but It needs more control over the textures and (This one is really starting to bother me) the ability to know where the textures/attribs/effects/objects are on the disk. I absolutely hate having to dig through all my subdirectories to find the texture dir. Also When you load a project then go into the detail editor and select load it should open to the object dir. for the project. Sorry I just had to get that off my chest. Anyways what I was going to say is you can't really say Imagine or pov has better textures, because it depends on what you need at the time. I've had times when using Imagine I wish I had some of the POV textures and times using POV I wish I had some of Imagines textures. Nuff said. I'm babbling -Sam J. Bowling

But, will it do everything POV 3.0 is supposedly going to do, and (2) can it do the things (like for example brush-tacking) that Imagine does but POV can't? Especially with the improvements in 3.2, it's hard to imagine a POV based modeller coming close to Imagine. >>Anyways what I was going to say is you can't really say Imagine or pov has better textures, because it depends on what you need at the time. I've had times when using Imagine I wish I had some of the POV textures and times using POV I wish I had some of Imagines textures.<< Well, I agree with this completely. I especially like POV's woods and stones. And I like the way that POV gives you the base elements of a texture (bumps, finishes, etc) and then lets you fool with them. I don't think that Imagine's bumpnoiz is as useful as the bumps in POV. But, Imagine does have a lot of animatable textures, and animating textures in POV is a pain in the neck. So, it is hard to generalize, but I was trying to give the original poster a vague idea to answer his question. Michael

Which will be ahead of everyone else, because the creator has access to the POV betas. >> can it do the things (like for example brush-tacking) that Imagine does but POV can't? << This would not be really necessary, because you can't bend a primitive cylinder in POV. Comparing POV and Imagine is like comparing apples and oranges. POV is CSG based and Imagine is Polygonal based (I'd like to see a full Spline editor in it though<G>). >> So, it is hard to generalize, but I was trying to give the original poster a vague idea to answer his question. << True, it is hard to generalize. What was the original question anyways?<g> -Sam J. Bowling

>>True, it is hard to generalize. What was the original question anyways?<g><< Good question. Not to prolong the sub-thread forever, but there are a few very simple things that POV does that I would like to see in Imagine. First of these is the ability to stop a trace and then return to it. Obviously, this capability slows things down a bit, but I would be willing to make the sacrifice. I suppose when WinImagine comes out, we won't need this, since we will be able to multi-task (won't we?). Michael
