This week's EE Times has an article on Commodore and the Ranger vs Atari and
the Amy. Some excerpts…

trail for Commodore, the company is preparing to launch its 68020 based high

The article goes on to talk about Atari's plans for the TT system. They
apparently have built 3 machines using 68020, NS 32000, and AT&T's WE32000
chip. The front runner for release is said to be the 68020 machine.
Then back to Commodore: The Amiga system has not sold in the numbers
anticipated by Commodore officials…. One former Commodore official told EE
Times that fewer than 25000 Amiga systems have been sold.
Despite the elegant architecture … software developers have not provided
the 68000 based Amiga with the same number of products that they've unfurled
for the rival 68000 based Apple Macintosh and Atari ST computers. …
Commodore will introduce a new version of its writable control store (disk to
RAM) Amiga operating system at the spring COMDEX. … One of the groups most
keen on Ranger's success and its possible effect on Amiga sales is
Commodore's bankers. Last winter they allowed extensions of Commodore's
credit based in part on an accelerated completion of Ranger. Perhaps the
system will sport sufficient silver bullets to stave off competition from
Atari's TT system and Apple's rumored 68020 Jonathan workstation.
I called the author of the EE Times article on the next generation of Atari and
C-A machines. I wanted to know why Atari engineers had code-named the new
machine "Amy", since my company bought the AMY additive sound synthesis chip
from Atari last summer. The author wouldn't reveal his sources at Atari. In
general, articles like this are speculation at best – each company is exploring
different machines. Glowing previews like this tend to blend all the possible
avenues of expansion into a single image, and that distorts the public view of
the future product.
Let me make sure I understand you right: Your company bought the rights to the
Atari Amy sound chip last summer? Then why are Atari officials still being
quoted that the chip is "almost alive and well?"

Because they hope to get the rights to sell it after John's company fixes it!
I can't imagine why a company like Atari who developed the 520ST in so little
time, would sell a project that they paid so much in R&D money on to another
company, knowing that they might "hope to sell it" in the future. Couldn't
they have hired one or two more designers to do the job, and wouldn't it have
been cheaper than paying a licensing fee for every chip that they sell with
their computers? So I don't think Atari will ever market it. How complete is
the chip now, and has anybody heard it in action? Is it only compatible with
the 6502 line of MPU's or is it a flexible design? And what does John's
company (I don't have any idea what it is called) plan to do with the chip?
