Just installed the update to PageStream… v 2.2. First thing I noticed was that it doesn't get along with Khalid's KD_FREQ & FR_Bypass (boo hoo). But after disabling my alternate file requester, it booted up great. The screen refreshes really are _Much_ faster. That's all I've done so far, but I wanted to see if anyone else can verify the KD_FREQ problem that I encountered. BTW, Thanks SL for the upgrade…. much appreciated! – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

Avoid the picture window when importing graphics. I read about the problem on their BBS. David Czaya

Thanks, David, for the warning on PICTURE WINDOWs in PgS 2.2… I'll be creating some new documents laer today and have a chance to put 2.2 throught the paces… – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

You're very welcome. I'd hate to see anyone lose an important document because of the Picture Window bug. I can't wait to get my copy. I always get so anxious once I know others have a copy in their hands and my mailman drives by shaking his head no. -Dave

BTW, I've posted some other important stuff on 2.2 in the Soft-Logik vendor forum. Don't forget to drop by there. I'll try to cross-polinate feedback from GEnie and CIS 2.2 users. (Hmm, cross-polination sounds like something Jesse Helms wouldn't like. Mike Soft-Logik Tech Support

Yes, avoid picture window importing. I don't know how this slipped through, pic windows were tested thoroughly in 2.2 fairly recently. Oh well. Who uses pic windows anyway? Mike Soft-Logik Tech Support

If picture windows are now busted, how do you crop an image from a page of clipart? > "Oh well. Who uses pic windows anyway?" I do. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

Well, that's what BME is for! It's great for cropping. I know, I know, it's not available yet. The cropping feature of PgS will be improved in a future version. The problem with pic windows has always been that cropping can be a couple of pixels off, at least in my experience. I've never trusted it. I crop everything in BME, DPaint or TouchUp. Cropping is high on my personal wishlist for the next major version, up there with tabs. Mike Soft-Logik Tech Support

I tend to use ADPro for cropping….and about everything else!

Mike, that's the best backpedal from a 'broken' feature I've read in a long time. 🙂 But…. I just tried using the Picture Window import, and it worked just fine. Seems to work regardless of whether I bring a graphic in as an Object or as a Picture window. Are you sure it's broken? –jp–seattle–

John: backpedalling to keep the masses happy is my job! (just kidding) Truthfully, I don't understand the problems people are having importted oops, importing graphics. I have zillions of test files in all formats and can't find any problems. If you want to send me a couple of proble files for testing, you can send them to my personal address at: Mike Loader, P.O. Box 107, Lazo, BC, V0R 2K0, Canada. Tech Support and Sales are rather busy right now, so I might get them looked at quicker. Mike Soft-Logik Tech Support

Mike, I got my upgrade today (yeah)! Two things I want to mention… After following the instructions for updating my hard drive to the letter, 1) my CG fonts no long work properly. They display, but all the characters overlap each other (kern problem?). I have updated the manager until my head hurts. All my other fonts seem to work fine. It's just the CGTimes, CGTriumvirate and Garamond. 2) I tried the Picture Window import and it seems to work just fine. False bug report, maybe? Ok, three things… 3) v2.2 is fantastic. I love it. It is just so much nicer to work with now. The requesters are great, everything. Can't wait for my HotLinks package to arrive now. Thanks. I hope you know what's up with my CG fonts. I use them all the time. -Dave

David – You ran into the same thing I did – Make sure the main PSFonts directory is in the Font Manager directory list, even if there are no actual fonts in that directory. PgS needs to see files like the plugin.typebucket and such that are in that directory. Harry
#47594From: David CzayaJan 29, 1992 1:24 AM
Thanks Harry. Sounds like it may be the problem. Take care… -Dave

Dave, I had simialar problems and this is how SL support instructed me to correct it. The KEY is that in addition to ADDing & UPDATEing the drawers which the fonts are in you also have to ADD the PSFonts drawer along with other FILES in that directory. Here are the directions which Cheryl gave me: (1) Use the FONT MANAGER to open files and SELECT the PSFonts drwaer by clicking on it. Select ADD. (2) Then remove all your font drawers and then RE-ADD them. This solved my problems. Good Luck. PS My screens with lots of data upgrade twice as fast now. Pagestream v2.2 is excellent.

Thanks Rob. I'll do it exactly that way. I appreciate the help… -Dave

Remember, if you want to redo all your font paths, you can simply delete your FONTLISTv2 file and then reinstall from scratch. Don't forget to add the basic PSFONTS path, plus the typebucket path. Another easy way to delete all font paths is to hold down SHIFT while selecting the Remove gadget (or delete or whatever it is called) in the Font Manager. This will remove all the font paths in the list. If you want to add an entire fontlist at once (make some paths, make default, and then rename under another name for later use (we do this with our Typeface Library a lot), you can add a fontlist by selecting ADD and then selecting the fontlist file in the file requester, and then selecting OK. All the fonts in the fontlist file will be added en masse. Mike Soft-Logik Tech Support

FIRST THING TO NOTE WHEN INSTALLING 2.2: Because the user could have colors set to whatever in 2.1, installing 2.2 and using the old PSPrefs file can destroy the 3D appearance. The best way to solve this problem is to delete the PSPrefs file and then run 2.2. You must then set your paths again with Set/Save Paths, and then reinstall your fonts. IF YOUR CG FONTS NO LONGER SEEM TO WORK (LETTER PILE UP OR DON'T SHOW UP): YOu need to update the path in which the plugin.typebucket resides. This is a real font file, so you must add it to the font manager. Secondly, if you have any old Helv or Tyme files around, DELETE THEM! They will cause problems, like the Triumvirate and CS Times names not showing up in the font requester. PICTURE WINDOW IMPORT: This is a verified bug in 2.2 which somehow slipped past betatesting. Some, not all, but some IFF pics will crash when cropped in a picture window. Some don't show up properly, all sorts of related problems. Avoid picture windows for now. Sorry. I'd consider selling a first born (something) for a useable tab set/unset capability (e.g. something like the one in WP). And, if the settings could be made for the block, the article, or the document — I don't know what I'd do!! 🙂 REC ——

Tabs are the number one item on the wishlist. They will be done in the next major upgrade. That's the only feature we'll acknowledge we're adding, no matter how hard you squeeze me. (I have to promise that one or I'll get trampled. 🙂 We don't need any more firstborns at the office, though. Pregnancy seems to be contagious this year. Mike Soft-Logik Tech Support

Glad to hear about the TABs!! As far as the other additions at the office … may the joy they bring, at least partially, offset the CRUSHING load of responsibility. 🙂 REC ——

Michael – I have the same problem with kd_freq and FR_Bypass. I have to modify my startup and reboot (there might be an unload function but I haven't read the docs 8^) ) in order to get PgS to load a file. I was about to post a message about it in AmigaVen and might still if you haven't posted there already. Harry

Michael: we have users on GEnie who have also reported that 2.2 is not compatible with Khalid's file requester. Sorry, I guess you'll have to decide which you want more! 🙂 BTW, BME, PageLiner and Art Expression use the same ASL routines, so… I've never seen these requesters. Why use them over 2.04's? Mike Soft-Logik Tech Support
#47316From: Michael GerardJan 26, 1992 1:03 AM
"I've never seen these requesters. Why use them over 2.04's?" Mike: Don't be so smug with the smiley face when you say "I guess you'll have to decide which you want more! :)"… I certainly use the file requester FAR more than anything else on the Amiga, including PageStream. Khalid's file requester/fr_bypass/file injector is wonderful stuff. Aside from being about twice as fast as CBM's (on a 3000/25), it is far more useful including a file INJECTOR. Do yourself a favor and download the archive (in AmigaTech/system utilities) and try it… then pass it on to your tech people. I have other programs that use their own file requesters, ignoring FR_Bypass, but PageStram is now the _one and only_ program I have that breaks when used with this file requester. So, in short, I resent your telling me that the answer is to pick which program I want to use. I'd prefer to have you say that you're looking in to the situation. I know that Khalid has been addressing some bugs in his FR, and maybe those fixes will correct the problem, however, if the problem turns out to be due to incompatible code in PageStream, I'm confident that SL will address the issue. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

I 2nd that Michael. I don't want no stinking company telling me what FR to use either. What are we using here, a Mac? 🙂 –jp–seattle–

JP: I think you understand what I'm talking about… I don't mean to slam SL or Mike, but if there is a problem, let's get it addressed, now. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

Sorry if I sounded smug. I'll look for the file req's and give them to the boss for testing. But ASL file req's are pretty standard stuff, I don't know why PgS would work differently with them than other programs. BME and PL have the most standard ASL file req implementation. (PgS's doesn't remember the size and pos I don't think). I'll test the file req with them. Mike Soft-Logik Tech Support

Mike: Thanks for looking into it. As you can tell from some of the responses here, Khalid's file requester is one of the most used used system utilities on the Amiga, and it really needs to work with PageStream… It shouldn't be too complicated to get it fixed, but SL really should talk to him (or he to SL). As I said, he was working on some minor changes and the new version may very well correct the problem, but we'll have to wait an see. In the meantime, I will locate the archive for you and let you know where it is. BTW, the non-sort inconvenience in the CBM FR is just one of the things that KD_Freq addresses! – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael
