Hi, can anyone give me some info on the Panasonic/Matsushita VTR called the AG 1960…..which is referred to alot in the US Amiga mags for Video use. Our local Panasonic importer doesnt know this Model and referred me to the S-VHS model FS100 (HI-FI) which can be used with the Edit Controller VW-EC300. OOPS VTR S/BE NV-FS100… Thanks for any help Laurie Carroll AKL NZ

Peter, thanks. This appears to be the "FS100" here in NZ which would be really great as it would be a good entry level for DTV here. Does it have a "Jog-Shuttle" round control on the front ?? Thanks again Laurie Carroll

Thanks for the replies. Have got some info on the '8000 and the AG7750.The second being a really expensive choice (NZD 10550 with I think it was the Time coder card) It looks like I should check out some other makers options eg the NEC PC-VCR. I want to be able to control the whole shebang if poss from my Amiga 2000 and ShowMaker. Any further input and suggestions very welcome Laurie Carroll AKL NZ

Laurie, I've never used the 1960 but I have a good deal of experience with the AG-1950–boy could I tell you stories! But I summarize it this way: I paid $1250 for my 1950–it recorded in SP & EP, was cable ready, super OTR programs, simulcast recording, Hi-Fi, AGC, 2 week programming, jog wheel, did insert and assmbly editing, and many more bells and whistles that I can't recall. I later paid $2200 for a JVC BR-5300U–a VHS edit source deck. It only played… in one speed. It does NOTHING else. Why the price discrepancy? One unit is design for professional applications the other is designed for hobbyists. Before you make a purchase you need to carefully evaluate your needs. Also, be careful of what magazines you get your information from. AV Video, Video System, Videography are good sources. Video and Videmaker, in my opinion, are not. Bill.

Bill, yes I see your point. I would like to get the 'pro gear but it depends on price initially and I think I have seen the first two mags down here. I have seen the difference the 'pro gear makes on output quality. I was assuming that the AG-1960 has the output quality via S-VHS Laurie

Laurie, The fact that it's S-VHS is only the beginning of the story. S-VHS performance can vary widely from machine to machine. But the problem with the 1950's that eventually caused me to scrap them was their inability to edit videotape properly. Perhaps for editing wedding and sports video or for home hobbysists they're adequate, but for anything more complex than that they are not suited–as the Panicsonic tech rep told me "your application has exceeded the capability of the machine". My application was basic insert editing. The 1950's glitched about 15% of the edits, caused excesive time base errors (TBE's) and numerous other problems that made editing very difficult. All things considered my decision to purchase 1950's was certainly not cost effective. I'm not saying they're not good machines–it really depends on your application. Panicsonic would have you beleive they high quality editing VCR's. I (and a number of Panicsonic's engineers) disagree. It really depends on your application. Don't discount the possibility of renting time at a post house. With a little shopping very reasonable rates can be found. Also, you'll be able to learn much faster than working by yourself. BTW, Panicsonic is attaining a very bad reputation throughout the industry. More for service (factory and otherwise) than for product quality.
