Syquest Beginner Qstns!

Does anyone have a couple of good pointers for someone just getting started
with a Syquest 88mb hard drive system? I have an Amiga 2500 system with an
A2090A controller. Maybe some doc files or something similar exists here
on CIS with advice about how to set it up, set the jumpers, get it to
mount, etc. I have no experience with it and no dealer support!
I will appreciate any help whatsoever, of course.

Martin,
I don't believe the A2090a supports removeable media drives. I'd
suggest you get an A2091 (last I heard, they were going for less than $50).
You don't need to remove the A2090a when you add the A2091, so if you've
got an ST-506 type drive hooked to it…you won't lose it.

Does this mean I cannot even use the Syquest at all with the 2090A? Of
course I need to replace the controller. I have wanted to do so for a long
time, but the problem has been a time shortage, naturally. Anyway, at this
time I would simply like to get it operational at all. But, if I must have
a new controller first, then I must!

Martin,
Give SyQuest a call. Maybe there is a new ROM or Patch to make the 2090A
work..never hurts to ask.

Yes, to the best of my knowledge…they won't work on an A2090a.

OK, then, one last question. Is any sort of support software required
other than the system software of AmigaDOS 2.x or 3.x?

Find the PD util SCSIMounter, and give all your disks the same device name
(i.e. SQ0:)

Humm…I'm not sure who you intended that reply for…it doesn't
relate to anything I'm in need of, or was talking about.

I too have a SyQuest 88MB removable drive but with a GVP Series 1 SCSI
controller. Somethings that I've discovered :
1. cartridge must be inserted before cold boot in order for AmigaDOS
to recognize the drive.
2. Disks can be swapped after No.1.
3. Doc files I received were written for an IBMer.
4. Last but not least…… SyQuest has a good BBS to answer problems,
offer files to help. "SCSI203.LHA" will mount your SyQuest so that you
may exchange cartridges (after no.1 above).
SyQuest's BBS number is 1-510-656-0473.
I have only one cartridge presently so I haven't checked out the above
concern.

Take care to capitalize the device name correctly (exec device names
are case sensitive!)
NOTE
SCSIMounter will not work with the Commodore A2090(A) controller card
because this product does not support Commodore's own 'SCSI direct'
and'RDB' standards properly."

In addition to Don and Patrick's excellent comments, I would like to add,
that with the A2091 controller, you can mount a SyQuest that was on the
bus without a cart during cold boot using "scsimounter" (a utility
availble here on CIS I believe).
