<cont> 2) A well-known CP/M file that's been implemented and expanded on IBM systems is something called NSweep, NewSweep, PCSweep, variously. What it does is allow you to run through a directory and mass tag, rename, copy, delete, archive, backup, type (and on the PC version open an ARC file and do same for individual files within archive), compress, send to printer, all the files in the directory — using pattern-matching wildcard characters. It also lets you mass set protection bits as well. Basically, the closest I've seen in Amigaland is Dir's OPT I function, which does delete and type at a ? prompt. No doubt there are utilities out there which do *some* of what NSweep does, but I haven't found an equivalent for the Amiga (oh– PC version also goes down directory trees). This program runs in about 20k on CP/M machines, and once it's loaded, requires *nothing* in any drive. It also will tell you how much disk space is left on any disk you insert in a drive without doing a CD or anything, and copy files from disk to disk without special logging commands. These are two elementary programs found on ol' CP/M systems which I'm surprised haven't inspired equivalents in the Amiga world; or am I missing something? ATREE.ARC looks like a first attempt at something like this, but it's pretty clumsy-looking at least in the initial version… steve w.

NewSweep-ish programs do indeed exist in several Amiga programs. Look at CLIMate, Zing!Keys and others. Rick Stevens/MicroBotics

All commercial ware, no doubt? That's the best thing about NSweep, it's 20k on-disk and it's FREEE! steve

There has got to be a half dozen or so NewSweep type programs for the Amiga in the public domain. Try doing a BROWSE with the keywords Dir* and *utility These programs have come to be known as Directory Utilities and have many unique features. Try a bunch of them and pick one you like. -Dave

Dave, thanks, I've looked over alot, and while there are lots of programs that have some individual features of NewSweep, there's *nothing* out there so far that has both the extensive capabilities, ease of use, and compactness of the NewSweep/PCSweep utility. There are some commercial programs that purport to be nsweepish, but they're in the $40-$80 range. I may just write my own if I don't find what I like (not much of a threat/promise, I'm new to the 68000 chip and would want to do it in assembly…). steve

Hmm, I come from CP/M background and some of the directory utilities I've seen blow that CP/M stuff right away with capability. I haven't used any PD ones lately (since I got CLIMate), but I'm sure they are out there. I'd keep looking. Perhaps you are just missing the good ones?!? There are a LOT to choose from. Seems like EVERYONE wrote a Directory Utility at one time or another! -Dave

Guess I'll eventually get CLImate, since it sounds like the commercial program of choice. Sure, there's lots out there, but none of it seems as fast and as extensive as NSweep (lots of loading, requires disk in drive, etc.) sw

You might want to look at DiskMaster. That's supposed to be really goodsend 3 Hi!

Yes, they're commercial. But they do exist, that was my point. You might leave a message to Steve Ahlstrom (our head Sysop here) or Vic Wagner of Metadigm. Those two guys, myself, and a few others form a very loose association we lovingly (laughingly?) refer to "DAS-Devil's Advocate Software". Rick Stevens/MicroBotics

Rick, hmm… maybe we should have a roster of DAS members marking those who have free time. (grin) (I wouldn't be on the free roster. 🙂 Khalid.

I don't mind paying for good commercial utilities, just have a hard time thinking about shelling out $40 for something I took for granted for years on my CP/M system, particularly when I'm not sure it does as much as the original program did on a 64k machine…. steve
