#New Amiga Owner
4 messages in this thread
Hi, I am new to the Amiga and I NEED to get a hard disk running on a 1000 with
the Spirit memory board installed. I can use either SCSI or ST506 type
interfaces. I would like to keep the cost down since I have ST506 drives SCSI
to ST506 adapters cases and ps already.
Can someone suggest some possible host adapters and discuss their merits. Also,
I am using an old Amiga external floppy disk case and interface board with a
NEC 3.5 disk drive. I can not get the system to reconize a disk change, but the
diskchange command works fine. Thanks to POPCLI I can use this setup but would
like it right. I hope someone can make some comments and point me in the right
direction.
Thanks,
Steve
Steve:
There are several good controllers out there for the Amiga 1000. The one that
I have on the 1000 is a C-Ltd SCSI controller and I believe that it is one of
the cheaper ones. In any event it works quite well and it will allow for some
network capabilities on the SCSI bus (that is the SCSI address is a software
setable function and the controller obeys the SCSI bus arbitration rules — are
you listening CBM?). I am not too sure about the other brands but Ed Lippert
III of C-Ltd has mentioned that several other brands of SCSI interfaces do obey
the rules even if CBM did not.

Steve,
Whatever you get…make sure you can return it for a full refund. There
is no guarantee that any 2 devices on the A1000 will work. it's only designed
to accept 1 add-on device. While many, many A1000's work fine with 2 devices,
there are also a number of them that will accept only 1 device.

If you have our StarBoard II product, we make a SCSI adaptor for it called the
StarDrive. Works well and isn't very expensive: $129.95 list.
