#Samplers?

Anyone have any advice for someone considering getting a sound sampler? My
needs are modest…I'm just wanting a good-quality unit for hobby digitizing.
What is the difference between Perfect Sound and Future Sound? They seem to be
only 10-20 dollars difference between the two…

If you think that you might be getting into MIDI too, then check out A.M.A.S.,
which is a small unit that has both a MIDI interface that plugs into the serial
port, and a sampler that plugs into the parallel port. (Unfortunately, there is
no pass through, so you need to get both serial and parallel port switches, or
switch cables a lot.)
I don't believe that Perfect Sound has a microphone input, so if that's
important to you, then Future Sound might be the better choice of the two.
I don't have any personal experience with samplers, though, just what I've seen
come across the message base and what I've read elsewhere. I'm certain that
others with specific experience will also post messages.

I have the AMAS, and it works well. The comment about the cables is true,
though – I just haven't broken down and gotten the switchboxes yet. Besides
the MIDI in, out, and through, it has a microhone jack (they even tell you
which Radio Shack microphone will work in it, along with giving the
requirements in case you don't want that one). The software is fairly nice,
though as near as I can tell each sample is limited to 200K (which gets
used up real quick at the higher sampling rates). A friend of mine as
sampled an entire song (4 megs worth!) using AMAS, but I think he was using
the AudioMaster (Aegis) software to sample with; at least I can't seem to
do that with the AMAS software no matter how many times I read the manual.
