#PAULA rumours

We had an Amiga "event" at a store here this weekend and C= brought in an
A3000. While everyone was milling around (ever get the urge to moo at one
of these things?), it was mentioned that the only chip that hasn't been
upgraded was the PAULA. The C= rep just sort of grinned and the discussion
was off and running! It was pointed out that 16 bit D/A's could be put in
the PAULA giving CD quality sound. Any one have any comments and/or heard
anything more definite? PS – Speaking of upgrading chips, I have two AGNUS
chips for the A1000. One is R3 and one is R5. Does anyone know what the
differences are?
You know, there are enough DMA cycles for 16-bit stereo sound. You'd only
have to voices, but it could be done!
Hmmn… And you know something else, there are enough DMA cycles for one
channel 16 bit sound at twice the sampling rate. I could do some pretty
neat things with that… <grin>

You, know you might be able to get 16-bit sound with the current Paula
chip! If voice zero's volume was set at max, and voice one (on the same
channel) was set at a much lower value, this might have the effect of
turning one channel into the top 8-bits, and the other into the lower
8-bits! Of course, finding out what this magic volume number is is another
problem….. -Scot

The more realistic approach is to chain the volumes tograter at audio
rates for an effective 14-bit audio in stereo. unfortunately, when i tested
this technique with an oscilliscope, I couldn't get the volu volume
links to synch up properly. Even so, you'd want double buffering and direct
disk record/play for 16 bit stereo, and at least some DSP for real-time
filtering and mixing, if not for spectrum and cepstrum work. I vaguely know
of three 16-bit systems being developed for Amiga, so it might be worth
holding one's breath. They are all several yearss too late, in my opinion.

Especially in light of the fact that CD player technology is now moving up
to 20 and 24 bit technology……..
