Has anyone heard anything about the developer's package called "Software
From Hell" from Conceptualy Advance Technologies. I'm interested in
switching to C from Pascal and I saw an add for it in an old Transactor,
and I am wondering if it is any good.

Check a recent issue of AmigaWorld, the month before or before that, there
was a review of Software from Hell. They said it was mostly good, as I
recall, except the code was sloppy in spots.

Bryce Nesbitt wrote a review of that in a recent AmigaWorld. I believe it
was the May issue.

Yes – I bought it. It's entirely Manx C, and is rife with bugs, as supplied
or converted into Lattice. It's full of good ideas and so on, but you'll
have a LOT of work to do with it if you intend to USE what he has there.

There's an upgrade (FREE mind you 😉 ) that's gonna be going out
inside of a month… that fixes any known bugs, and adds a few new
functions as well. How about a nice quick requester function…. compatible
with Steve Tibbet's if you've seen it. Also the graphics routines have
been cleaned up even further and a few new functions have been added
such as open_screen()/close_screen(), open/close_bitmap(). The BlitShape()
routine has been fixed. And the disk routines are now TOTALLY system
legal, they used to poke a trackdisk internal, but no more. There's also
support for getting millisecond timer interrupt/signals.
Much additional work has gone into cleaning anything I could find.
But, getting bug reports/suggestions from actual users would be really
appreciated. So far, I've been about the only one generating bug
reports, and I can be pretty strict on myself.

Look who's here! No, I didn't send in my warrenty card. Instead, I called
you on the phone, and asked you about a Lattice version. You said it wasn't
planned, and I went thru a very laborious process of converting the thing
myself. Having done so, I'm pretty well done with it. We have our own
requester, 2.0 has _it's_ own requester which the user will be able to
setfunction; which means that soon we won't be needing in built-in
requester at all. If the user has a requester preference, they can set it
globally for all applications, which is mucho cool. The rest of those
fixes look like they'll go a long way towards cleaning up the package; good
job! For me, though, you can save the upgrade, as I think I've already
gotten just about the max out of the package that I could – especially
considering that I'd have to convert th whole thing again. Good luck with
it – neat idea, _terriffic_ title.
Welllll, we do hope to get Lattice support in there for 1.1 as well, and if
you have any suggestions for future versions, I'd love to hear them… we
may not implement them, but then again, we just might. Sorry I couldn't
have helped more with the Lattice version, I hope it wasn't too painful…
that's why I tried to make everything VERY Lint friendly, which should have
reduced most compiler specific things, although not having the Lattice
compiler makes being Lattice compatible a little tough. 🙂 We should be
getting Lattice within a month, and that will be the first order of
business. Good luck with your HAM-E package by the way, I'm dying to see
it in the stores!
Me too. :^) You make it Lattice, I'll go after it again, buy it fresh if
that's necessary.
I'd be VERY interested in your package if I could use it with Lattice. I'm
not proficient enough with C or well versed enough with either compiler to
be able to port from Manx to Lattice (at least I haven't been very
successful with the things I've tried so far). Maybe you could have some
one port the modules over for you so that you could support both platforms.
Well, I'm sure that when 1.1 is released, I'll definitely have to have
Lattice support. Seems everyone wants it. 🙂 Well, the customer is
always right. As soon as we can rap up getting The Reaper out the door,
I'll put the final touches on 1.1, and see about getting ourselves a
Lattice compiler and make sure it's Lattice compatible.

Hmm. For some reason the powers that be deleted my
answer to your question. Not very friendly, no explanation
or anything. How rude. Evidently one is not allowed to
answer questions on CIS. I suppose I may be forced to go
hide back on BIX then. Well, I suppose I'll just have to
cut back on CIS then. I think the reply was on long enough
for you to see it though (as I recall).

We don't delete answers to questions here. They do scroll off very quickly
though. We can have only 999 messages in the forum at any one time. Each
time a new message is entered, an older one scrolls off at the other end.
It takes about four to six days to scroll that many here in AmigaTech,
depending on the number of messages posted each day. Sometime soon – not
sure when – this forum will probably be divided into two others, giving us
twice as much message room, and a much slower scroll-off rate. Sorry your
message scrolled off too quickly, but that is what happened.

I don't see how it scrolled off BEFORE the question did tho? And after 1
day? That was sort of odd. That's the part that threw me, was there were
messages from three days prior, and then my answer lasted about 36 hours.

Was the question that you think was deleted possibly an answer to
Ben about what the Reaper is? If so…that reply is still here, it's
number 103259.
If that's the answer you think was deleted…then I know what
happened, the message wasn't deleted…it was simply moved into a thread of
it's own so if you went back and looked at the question…you'd see no
reply attached to it….but the answer is, and always has been here since
you left it, and it's still addressed to Ben.
If that's not the message you're speaking of…can you tell me what
the message was about…and when it was left. I'll try to figure out what
happened to it. I assure you…I did not delete it, and I don't believe
any of the other sysops did either.

Never mind… It got forwarded as an e-mail reply since it was
fairly specific AND included a price. A general reply I believe
got put elsewhere — in "general" I think. 🙂

I have it, but am just now looking at it. I have had problems compiling a
few of the examples, but it might be that I don't have it installed
properly yet (I JUST got it). BTW, it assumes you have Aztec-C.
