I'm having a small problem using Music-X files I've converted from SMUS
files. The problem is spacing between notes. If for instance, there are
four quarter notes, all the same note, MusicX plays them so close together
it sounds almost like one whole note. What I need to do is make it more
human sounding, like someone who couldn't release a key then hit it again a
thousandth of a second later. Looking in the manual, I thought I'd found
the answer, adjusting the grid size or duration of notes (page 214), but
that doesn't seem to be the answer. Is there any way to do what I want?

Yes, the note is held down so long that it almost runs into the next note,
and yes, it does depend on the sound-on a drum it would be no problem-with
an organ, instead of four quarter notes, it sounds like one whole note on a
sick organ.
Try replacing the quarter notes with dotted eighth notes and a sixteenth
note rest.

Much easier than that (I finally found it in the manual, I knew something
this basic wouldn't be overlooked), highlight the offending notes, then
hold down the shift button and use the right cursor key to shorten
themmaking sure "snap" is off.

I found a _big_ bug in Music-X 1.03 that I hope you'll be able to tell
me is already fixed in V.1.04. When using MIDI Time Code as the clock
source, and using (or should I say trying to use a keyboard to input
notes), via a MIDI merger, Music-X won't record the sequence. Instead, you
end up with lots of "err" numbers. I've tried this with two different
keyboards and two different mergers with the same result.

Strange! I am pretty sure (failing memory) that people have used MIDI
Time Code (not "SMPTE") with 1.03, but I'll check. —Mike
Yes, I'm using MTC (generated from SMPTE) to drive M-X. I've used it for
some time now using it to drop in sound effects for films. However, I've
always used the sequence editor to manually type in the code numbers (from
the window dub). Just hooked it up as a sequencer withing the past week and
ran into the problem, using the MTC (gneerated from SMPTE) merged with the
keyboard for note information. There is no problem when using the internal
clock source, or playing back a sequence with-just recording one. I'm
fairly certain it's an M-X bug, as I said, I've tried it with 2 keyboards
and 2 different mergers.

One of the minor problems I've had with Music-X is the protocol for
the TX81Z included with the unit. Whenever I try to use it I end up with a
"Protocol Error". Is there an update? Preferably one that works. I've
looked at the protocol standards, from Yamaha, and the protocol editor in
Music-X – and it looks like it'll be trying to translate Greek into Latin –
while speaking neither!

Yeah, protocols are a lot of fun. I will pass along your question to
them that know. I do know that Music-X 1.1 will fix the occasional serial
communication problem that sometimes causes data to be lost. Do you think
it's a communication problem, or a mistake in the actual protocol data?
(Most likely, that is what you are asking me. I will see what answer I can

Seems to be (my guess, anyhow) an error in the actual protocol. The
firs few times I tried it, I ended up with a "device not responding"
message after a few seconds-turns out it wasn't hooked up correctly! One of
my MIDI cables was unplugged. Now, I instantly get a "protocol error"
message. They seem to be communicating, just not speaking the same
language.

Not yet. Unbeknownst to me, Matt Nathan has been on vacation for 3
weeks, and they decided not to pass along my questions to David Joiner.
Pisses me off, actually. Matt is supposed to be back in the office today,

Out of curiosity, which mergers did you use? I have a Digital Music Corp.
MX-8 MIDI Patch Bay that allows for mergering. Haven't tried it yet with MX
as configured in your message though.

One is the Anatek pocket merge, the other the Midiman Syncman, same
problem with both.
