#1000/2000 PARALLEL DIFF

Hello! I just picked up a sound digitizer *FutureSound* at the NY World of
Amiga a couple of weeks ago. I failed to notice however that it was for a
1000 not a 2000, which I own. The problem is that the connecter that goes
to the parallel port is female, which is fine for the 1000, but the
parallel port on the 2000 is also female. My question is simply, can I get
away with just a gender changer between the two connections, or is there
some pinout differences that would make the devices incompatible even with
a gender changer? The company *Applied Visions, Inc* out of Cambridge, MASS
seem to be out of business. The manual has no tech info whatsoever. Anyone
who might know of the par port differences between the 1000 and 2000 and
might be able to help, please let me know. I don't want to risk the chance
of any damage to my so far reliable Amiga. Any info would be greatly
appreciated.

NO…a gender changer will not work.
Not only has the gender changed, but pins # 14,15,16 have been
swapped with pins 23,24,25. So the wires that went to 14 15 and 16 on the
1000…now go to pins 23, 24 and 25 on the 2000. And vice versa.
One of those pins (14 on the 2000…23 on the 1000) carries power
and you don't want it plugged into the wrong thing!

I've done this with my FutureSound, and it does work just great!

Steve, now I'm confused.
There has to be some differences with different hardware configs/versions
of Future Sound for you to just use a gender changer and get it to work.
How else could this be if the pinout differences Don outlined are true? I
was thinking about using a pinout board between the two connecters to get
the right config, but maybe I don't need one. How recently did you buy your
FutureSound? I think it also comes in a 500/2000 version. You wouldn't
happen to have that version? Anyway, thanks for the input. Any "sound
advice" I can get is appreciated!!

The gizmo I have is a gender changer (to convert the pins around) which
allowed me to re-wire the actual pin connections too. So, it's actually a
combination gender changer/1000-2000-pinout-changer.

I'm going to fix up a "converter cable" for myself. I just want to double
check the pinout conversions. I take it that pins 14, 15, and 16 on the
FutureSound side go to pins 23, 24, and 25 on the 2000 side respectfully.
The rest stay the same, right?

Be careful! Pin 14 on the 2000 has +5 volts, and it's ground on the 1000.
I recommend that you look carefully at both pinouts for the 1000 and the
2000, and make sure you hook everything up correctly. If you're not sure
about it, have someone else do it. Remember, do this at your own risk!
(The file PARINT.ARC in library 6 has this information, but to be
completely sure the info is correct, look at the hardware manuals).

Bad news. I tried using the Future Sound with my 2000 by just adding a
gender changer and it didn't work. I was able to run the software, but I
couldn't get any signal in through the unit. I have a very old unit, but
it still works fine with my 1000. I don't know what pin out problems would
account for the difference and since I can use it with my 1000, I haven't
bothered my staff techie with it. Sounds like we could both use a help
solving this one.

the line feeding power to the parallel port is changed on the
2000/500 from where it was on the 1000. You really should check with your
techie… s/he may be able to help.

You're probably right. But since I still have the 1000 parked on the other
desk, I usually just go ahead and use it. It isn't really difficult to
take the digitized sounds diskd over to the 2000 and use them there. What
I really want to do is get a network set up so my two machines can share
data easily. My 1000 is still a nice unit and I haven't been able to
convince myself to part with it yet.
So I keep the Future Sound hitched up to it. (which leaves the parallel
port on my 2000 free for printing and digiview.) Before I got the 68020
card from Imtronics installed I had a Printerface board in there and I
loved it. If I get an -030 card, I plan to reinstall the printerface.
