#Ports & Messages
5 messages in this thread
I'm teaching myself C the hard way, going one on one with books. I'm having
a difficult time with Ports and Messages. I'm reading "Inside The Amiga
With C" by John Berry and when I think I understand pretty much what the
text describes, the examples totally confuse me. Does anyone know of
another, more basic source for learning C on the Amiga? Please help me out,
I've been really trying hard to get this down. (I have Lattice 5.04)

Tim,
Get thee to the data libraries (DL9) and download some source code.
Examples in books usually have typos anyway, and why bother typing them in?

Tim,
I have the Amiga Programmer's Handbook, Vols I and II, and they are really
good if you are trying to understand how things are put together on the
Amiga. Each volume goes into a lot of depth about HOW things relate to each
other, not just the syntax for each call. Sheldon Leeman's book has some
good examples and a fairly easy to understand text, but be warned that the
examples do have a few typos.

Hi Tim,
I've found the Berry book helpful because you have to correct the typos
to get anything in it to compile/run right. The best Amiga book I've found
is Rob Peck's book 'Programmer's Guide to the Amiga'. You may have to
special order it but it's well worth the price.

Some agreement here. I thought Berry's book had too many examples and most
didn't change much from the last one. Plus there are many mistakes. Stay
away from that one and go right for Peck's book. Peck doesn't hve near as
many examples but does a excellent job explaining what is going on. Of
course I haven't read enough of this book, but bits and pieces are
consistently well written.
