I just started a computer class using FORTRAN. I am interested in doing
most of the work at home, and sending my finished programs to the main
computer at school via modem. The school uses a VAX computer with a few
hundred VT220 terminals, and VMS is the operating system. I am unfamiliar
with the type of software I would need to accomplish this. If I was unable
to send my programs by modem, I still would like to do some of the
programming at my computer. Any ideas on what I need, and some rather
low-priced software would be greatly appreciated.

Not having enough information, I'd have to guess that the VAX at your
school (what model is it anyway) probably supports VT100 terminals, and at
least the Kermit protocol. If this is the case, the VT100 terminal program
for the Amiga (I believe it's up to version 2.9B, although I'm still using
version 2.8), may be sufficient for your immediate needs (it does have
limitations, such as no printer control). Hope this helps.

Yes, I have since checked and they are VT-100 terminals. Would I need
anything else besides the VT-100 terminal program?

The documentation file that comes with the VT-100 program should give you
all the info you need to run it. It does not require the use of ARP, but
the latest version does support AREXX (but does not require it). For
uploading and downloading, you need to make sure of what protocols the VAX
at your school uses (the VT100 terminal program supports Kermit and X
Modem). Does this answer your question?

Or try scrolling regions in 40 columns…
Or switching back and forth between smooth and jump scroll while
scrolling. (This is the absolute BEST effect! Ever seen 24 cursors on the
screen at once?)
Until the emulators include the bugs, they just won't be the same…
