#2.04 compatibility

Can anyone out there tell me if there's any conflict between Workbench 2.04
and the A2286 Bridgeboard? I'd like to upgrade to 2.04, but seem to
remember having heard that there are compatibility problems? Any info
would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mary Ellis,
I understand that you can't install the software needed using 2.04. You
would have to revert to 1.3. However, once it is installed, you can go to
2.04 without any problems. It is just the inslulation software that
doesn't get along with 2.04. Am I right Michael?????/

Pcprefs won't work with Janus 2.0. Otherwise, things SHOULD work.

No real conflict, provided the software is already installed on your hard
disk. The installation program won't run, neither will PCPrefs. Some of my
readers have successfully installed it by copying files (including
unexpected ones like the FORMAT command), but I couldn't get it to work. I
had to re-install everything.

The present version of PCPrefs for the bridgeboards (BB's) does not work
under 2.04. You should either get the bootup board that allows the machine
to boot from either 1.3 or 2.04, or you should set all the preferences you
need before switching and and back up your settings.

As I understand the situation, it appears that if I already have the
bridgeboard (hardware and software) installed, I should have no problems
running 2.04. However, one comment was made that Janus 2.0 won't work
under 2.04. Does that mean that I would –have– to get the bootup board,
and boot under 1.3 when I want to use the BB? I'm kind of lost here – no
one else I know has the BB, and my sources of information are limited to
this SIG. Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Mary,
The BridgeBoard works under 2.04, there are a few problems with the
shared disk (JLink) and trying to run PCPrefs under 2.04 will cause your
machine to GURU.
However, other than those two relatively minor problems…it works
fine. I'm using an A2088 BB and 2.04 with no problems at all since I don't
use JLink.

While it is still vapor… The Ambassador from Consultron reportedly will
negate the need for JLink, and make file access on any connected device
much faster. (according to Leonard Ploma/Consultron). This should make life
a whole bunch easier for BB users.

As others have said, Janus 2.0 works under 2.04, with the exception of the
installation program, PCPrefs and creating JLINK files.

I have the BB working with 2.04 except for one frustrating problem. I have
a 3.5 inch floppy hooked up to the back of the BB, that used to work. The
added line in config.sys is
DrivParm =/D:01 /F:2 /B:02 /S:09 /T:80
When accesing it, I get "Reading disk failure". The only thing I changed
near the same time was switch to MSDOS 4.01? Could there be a "drivparm"
change? I don't even get the disk light to come on for a second. I also
don't have an A: drive hooked up.
Could you suggest something for me to try. I now have no disk drives except
for C: as a FakeDrive 🙁
Any help would be most appreciated,

I have the following line for DRIVPARM in my config.sys file under DRDOS
6.0. I checked the manuals for both MSDOS 3.3 (the one that came with the
BB) and DRDOS 6.0.
DRIVPARM /D:1 /C /F:2 /H:2 /S:9 /T:80
There was no /B switch in either manual. I suggest that /H:2 is
probably the correct choice. I put the /C switch in because 3.5 inch
drives are typically able to detect a change. I have an AIR external 3.5
inch drive which appears as either B: drive hooked to my XT bridgeboard or
as DF2: hooked to the Amiga side upon powerup.

I really thought that would fix my problem. What prevents a disk drive from
getting read if it works fine? Do I have to have an A: drive hooked up
first? It used to work fine 🙁

In my setup things are fairly standard and stock stuff. The original
360K drive that came with my XT BB is in my Amiga 2000HD's lower bay. An
AST SixPakPlus and a 2 Meg LIM 4.0 RAM board from Elek in Texas are in my
PC slots. The only software difference is an upgrade to DRDOS 6.0.
Anyway, my A: drive is always hooked up. The B: drive is sometimes on
the XT BB and sometimes on the Amiga side since it is an external 3.5 inch
AIR drive. It seems to work better as DF2:.
You need to give a more exact description of your problem before I can
give you a useful guess.

I have what normally is df2: in my 2500 hooked up to the back of the XTBB.
The DRIVPARM is in config.sys, but when I try to read drive b: I get a
drive error as if it can't find it. The drive lite never comes on. I'm
using MS-DOS 4.01. Wht won't DOS try and read the disk or find the drive?
Any help is most appreciated, as I'm dead in the water without it.

Well, you could upgrade to either MSDOS 5.0 or DRDOS 6.0! Can you use
the B: drive under MSDOS 3.3? I ask this to eliminate or to isolate a
possible hardware problem. Since you did not say that DF2: malfunctioned,
I assume that the drive is probably OK. Other than mentioning obvious
possibilities, it is somewhat hard to troubleshoot long distance. You may
have to do other things to determine whether you have a broken wire or a
hardware problem. Have you tried reseating the bridgeboard? If you're
handy with tools, did you try reseating the chips? You don't have to
remove the chips (ONLY the ones that HAVE sockets) from their sockets, just
use a screwdriver after grounding yourself appropriately to loosen a chip
and push it back in. You don't completely remove a chip to avoid the
inadvertent bending of a leg.

The XT expects to find an A drive and hangs up waiting for you to
acknowledge it. Usually it asks you to press F1, but that may be different
in DOS 4.01–I haven't checked it out. You might try pressing F1 and see
what happens!
I'll do a little reading on DRIVPARM and see if I can find anything else.

I run my A2088 XT bridgeboard under 2.04. The installation software to
set up the XT BB won't run under 2.04. However, if you have already
installed your XT BB, then you can run it. You just can't change it once
you install 2.04. Now I've saved the settings from the PC Window without
crashing. But PCPrefs does crash under 2.04. Consequently, just save the
setup files in the PC directory so that you can restore them. Now I
haven't had to restore mine so you just back them up along with your other
files.
You DO backup your files, don't you! 🙂
The new Janus software that is supposed to come out RSN would, of
course, run under 2.04. I haven't seen it, and the licensed developers
simply grin and disappear like the Cheshire cat in Wonderland.
Consequently, we still wonder when C= will finally release the Janus
updates.
I didn't get the multiboot board because I decided to just take the
plunge and update one way without going back. Eventually, 2.04 will be
updated, and then what? Get yet another board? Nah, I would rather just
update. Most of the serious software will be updated, too, or can be
abandoned. And I'm not a serious gamer. Too much fun talking to real
people here! 🙂

Yes, I DO back up my files – more specifically, my hard disk. I guess I'll
take the plunge. My BB is an AT, but I don't suppose that'll make much
difference as far as any of the information I'm getting from all you
wonderful people. Thanks loads for the info.
