Does anyone have MSCDEX running in a DOS window under OS/2 2.0 GA?
I have a Procom Technology CD-ROM drive (model PICD650S) attached via its
own adapter card to my 386 AT-clone. Since Procom tells me they do not
support OS/2, it is my assumption I can only use my drive in a DOS or
WIN-OS2 window. I can load the driver just fine via the CONFIG.SYS file,
but when I attempt to run MSCDEX I consistantly get a "Incorrect DOS
version" message. I am running the latest MSCDEX, which I just downloaded
from the MS BBS. I have been unable to fix the problem using the
DOS_VERSION setting on the DOS session.
If anyone else has gotten MSCDEX to run under OS/2 2.0, I would appreciate
hearing how you did it.
I don't have my 2.0 yet, but it's my understanding that the "incorrect DOS
version" problem can be solved by booting a specific version of DOS via the
boot image. The DOS that you get in a VDM reports its version as '20'.
Since I don't have the package yet I can't tell you how to do it,but you
are supposed to be able to create a boot image of your DOS disk on the hard
drive and then use that to load a DOS session.

Jim, this might be related to the now-famous problem of mscdex v2.20 and
v2.21 requiring SETVER in your config file, if OS/2 (about which I know
nothing) has such an animal, of course. You may also want to be aware of
several different versions of mscdex lurking about, including some from MS
that appear to be corrupt. Most of this is documented in file laser3.txt

Yes, it works. 1. Create a DOS 3.3 or 4.01 boot disk. 2. Test it by stating
DOS STARTUP DRIVE = A 3. When OK, create an .IMG file from the disk (put on
hard disk) 4. Change DOS STartup to point to the IMG file. This works with
my NEC 73 and OS/2 2.0 GA. Mike

From your comment you have an NEC 73 up and running with the NEC
73. I am not having any success. I am on an IBM Model 90, using the IBM
SCSI. Other than the internal hard disk, it is the only other SCSI device.
What are your CDROM.SYS settings and what is your ID for the NEC SCSI
device?
Any other ideas would be welcome.

Note, I'm only running under OS/2 in DOS Boxes with freshly-booted DOS 3.3
or 4.0. Your IBM SCSI card is OK but the drivers provided with GA only
appear to support IBM and Toshiba drives (hard coded). Hope this helps .

Did you try adding an /I (letter I) parm to the device line for CdRom.sys?
I think I read that this bypasses the check for specific hardware, and may
work for SCSI drives compatible with IBM's. I'm using a proprietary Sony
drive from Online Products, so I don't really know, just trying to help.
My non-scsi cdrom drives work just fine, using a driver supplied by Online
Products.

I, too, have a proprietary Sony drive and have been scouring the wires for
an OS/2 2.0 driver for it. Do you mean that Online has an OS/2 driver, or
that you are using the DOS driver in a VDM?

No, I have a true OS/2 driver, and don't use MsCdEx any more at all.
Things work great, in all OS/2 sessions and normal DOS VDMs.
There are various Sony drives, I understand, and some are SCSI. Mine is
not, as I said it's a CDU-6100 and uses some proprietary SONY protocol.
The driver I have supports my microchannel card, a CDI210s manufactured (or
at least sold) by Online Products.
There are some Online Products people who monitor this forum, perhaps one
of them will respond. IOnline Products does have an 800 number,
1-800-922-9204, but the sales people may not be able to help you, I don't
know. I hesitate to give you more specific names, since I don't want to
annoy them after they put up with a lot of hassling from me. But you might
ask here on the forum, perhaps with a message that included Online Products
in the title. Remember, the one I have is for a microchannel card and is
NOT SCSI, so it may not do anything at all for you.

Sorry, I have no idea which Toshiba models are supported – I simply have
READ that IBM and Toshiba are "hard-coded" into the IBM supplied driver
that comes with OS/2 2.0. Mike
