Pagenumbering in PPage?

I'm working on a handbook for Composition teachers in my department. It
will be revised several times for sure. I am trying to figure out how to
handle page numbering in Ppage. For one thing, if the template is not
perfectly symmetrical (i.e. if the left page has a different footer from
the right page) then inserting a page later on could be a major pain. A
friend tells me that in PageMaker this is handled automatically: if you
insert a page all subsequent pages are shifter onto the proper template.
Any way to do this in PPage 3.0?
In any case, I have decided on the same page for left and right, just for
simplicity. Still, there is a problem. For now, I am composing individual
chapters as ppage documents and giving them page numbers such as
"Grading-1" etc. Eventually, I want the page numbers sequential for the
whole book. Will I have to do that manually?
I notice you can give a box a name in PPage 3.0. (Naturally, I couldn't
find any documentation about the feature in the manual!) Does this mean
that if the page number box had a name (in the template) then a Genie could
be written to upgrade all the page numbers?
Any help at all on how to handle page numbering for large in-process
projects would be great. How do *you* handle this problem?
PS: Can one INSERT a page so that PPage's page 4 remains page 4 in the doc?
When I add a page, it always goes to the END of the doc.

When you add a page tell it where to put the page in the Create from
requester. From Page 0 to Page 1 should put a page in front of Page 1.
In page|alter|Current, next to Page # Offset is another box on right,
changing the number in this box changes the positioning of the page. It
also pushes the page that used that number to another position. I've used
this to print odd pages first then put them back in printer to print even
pages on other side.
Yes, for the Genies to work you must give the boxes names, then a genie
could be written like you asked.
I'm hoping that Philip will jump in here and answer the first part of your
question and verify that I got the other parts correct.

I had some trouble figuring out how to do something as basic as
pagenumbering in PPage myself. There is a tutorial on page 46 of the
manual for auto-numbering of pages. Basically you just make a small box
where you would like your page numbers to be and type "Page" and then hold
down the Control key and press 2. Further information and control codes
for automatically inserting the current date (CTRL-5), continued from page
(CTRL-1), continued on page (CTRL-3), and document creation date (CTRL-4)
can be found on page 204.
Using the InsertDoc Genie you should be able to start with Chapter 1, then
insert Chapter 2, Chapter 3, etc. (or whatever order you wish to assemble
them) with all page numbers being automatically updated.

Re your Questions on page numbering in PPage v3.
1) You are correct in noting that templates do not automatically
shift to accomodate left and right pages. However, I do not think that
this is a trivial exercise. I am currently working on a 60 page catalogue
and have different left and right pages. I suggest that you should look at
the supplied Genies (and those of Don COX) for methods of manipulating
fixed boxes on pages. Alternatively a custom Genie is fairly easy to
create to manipulate bosex on your pages to specific positions etc.. It
could also easily add/delete/modify locatable (ie by name or position)
that would normally make up a template.
2) With regard to automatically numbering your pages, this is also
fairly simple. If you are creating the sections as individual documents
just use the standard automatic numbering options, then when you merge the
individual documents (using the Genie InseTDoc) the numbering will be
automatically adjusted. Don't do it manually. If your current numbering
procedure is a little more exotic, you could again write a simple Genie to
convert it to your final requirement as you have suggested. However if you
set it up right from the start you should not have to do this.
3) Naming of boxes is documented on 38 of the supplement. I found it
a bit difficult to get an handle on but once you do its quite useful. If
you have named the boxes with the pagenumbers in them you could use a
genie to modify them. You can also scan for specific text, look in a
specific location etc.. Many ways. You could also use the Genie
"ReplaceBoxesOnPages" written by Don Cox to do a bulk update in your final
document.
4) I think a specific Genie is required here if you dont like moving
pages back to the correct location. It would only be a few lines long.
However note that when you add a page (using Create from…) you can
specify the page location you want to start at.
