Don (or any other hard-disk wizard) –
I have recently managed to corrupt the root block of one partition on
my Quantum 210. I do not know if anything else is corrupted.
I have a plain vanilla A2000 with 4.3 motherboard and 2.04 in ROM.
The partition is one of 5 equal 41-meggers, controlled by an ICD
AdSCSI 2000.
AmigaDOS, QuarterBack Tools, and FixDisk simply find the disk "Not
DOS" and unreadable.
DiskX and Sectorama can read it and show me the (defective) root
block.
Is there a good way (?ANY way?) to fix/rebuild/construct-by-hand the
root block of a partition (say, using DiskX)?
What would happen if I used DiskX to save the root block of a
different partition, and then used DiskX to overwrite THAT block onto
this corrupted root block?
Is it possible, with any PD, shareware, or commercial program, to salvage
the files on a partition whose root block is corrupted? Will DiskSalv work?
As to hard-disk backup, I am in the process of trying to get a tape-backup
system to work properly, and–although this partition was backed up, I
cannot as yet restore successfully. Not only that, but the partition is my
telecomm stuff (Whap!, JR-Comm, and all the D-L's….)

You can obviously format it, and then restore it…but I don't
think that's what you want to do.
If AmigaDOS finds the disk to be not a dos disk…then the problem
starts with the first sector on the partition. it's that sector that tells
AmigaDOS what kind of disk is there.
Since this is a partition…I presume it has a mountlist and if so,
then make the first 4 bytes of block 0 of the parition = the dos type shown
in your mountlist. That'll more than likely be the ASCII characters 'DOS'
plus the value 1. You can use sectorama to fix it.
Once you get it recognized as a DOS partition (either reboot after
the write of sector 0 or issue a diskchange command for it), then your
tools ought to be able to recover all your files.

A PD utility called DiskSalv has gotten me out of many a bind when mh HD
would 'crash'. You can find itin the Fred Fish library or perhaps its still
on here.
