What sort of Unix is availble for the Amiga and what are the system
requirements?
AT&T System V release 4 from C= itself.
Min system: 68030 with MMU (A3000, or A2000/030)
(A4000 does not work currently – likely won't later)
8 meg memory (18 recommended)
100 meg HD (200 recommended)
A3070 tape drive (distribution is on tape, not needed to
run system)

Commodore used to produce a machine called the Amiga 3000/UX which should
still be available in some stores. This machine has an version of Unix
called System V (5) version 4 (SVR4 for short) produced by AT & T. I am
using one now to write this message. I can run all unix stuff on it by
choosing unix from my boot menu. In fact if I just boot the machine
without using the mouse it comes up in Unix mode. I have used Sun unix
machines and the unix is comparable only lacking the Sunwindows GUI. It
has Xwindows instead.

What version of Amiga Unix are you using? My 3000UX came with v1.1, and
I've been told that the 2.1 version is much nicer, is that the version you
have?

Whom ever told you that gets the "understatement of '92 award"! That is
almost as true as saying that "AmigaOS 2.x is much nicer than 1.3."!

I guess I'll have to upgrade my Unix sometime soon. As I've installed an
040 card in my 3000 I think I'll wait until C= makes an 040 version of
their Unix (assuming that they will).

Does anyone have any info on any plans for '040' support for
Amiga Unix??? Are they waiting for USL to update the "base",
or is it just not something that they are planning to do
much work on.

I don't have any info on any plans, but I sure hope that the Amiga
implementation of Unix is gonna get upgraded to work with an 040! 🙂

I have heard about 50-Mhz 68030 processors, is it possible to
upgrade from a 25-Mhz to a 50-Mhz processor on an A3000?
This would be another way to boost performance other than
to get a '040.

Yes, but the bus speed won't increase. Thus, the amount of memory
included on the processor card becomes quite important.

By the way, I am having trouble getting color to show up in my Unix
xwindows on my Amiga 3000UX what could be wrong? When I try to start
xterm using appropriate rgb values, it doesn't seem to work. The whole
screen is in black/white :-<. Any ideas?
I use xdm, which allows me to run color X on a 2410. If you are running
without a 2410, then all you can do is monochrome X. If you want
information as to how to run xdm, see the readme in /usr/X/xdm.
