#ADPro still Broken

Is it still true that Sentry will not work with Lightwave?
Will this ever be fixed?
–Paul < Motorola Inside >
We are looking into this problem. Lightwave opens and closes its files multiple
times while writing and this is fooling Sentry. Sentry is doing exactly what it
was designed to do. Process complete files as they show up and DOS considers a
file complete when the file gets closed. Lightwave is causing this problem by
not handling file i/o in a standard manner. If this behaviour is going to
continue in Lightwave then Sentry will have to be fudged to handle the special
case. This is what is being considered.

I wonder how REND-24 (shareware) handles this? I believe it does wait for
the IFF (not FrameStore) to be rendered and then does its thing. It will
even delete the IFF after it adds it finished using it, to handle space
limits.
(Wondering if there is a difference on how LW creates IFFs and FS? Could
one make an ARexx script that would wait for a given amount of time, then
copy the LW image destination to the place were Sentry is waiting?)

Sentry doesn't work with lightwave?
Somebody must have forgotten to tell MY copy of Sentry that!
Just last night I used Sentry and AdPro to create an anim from lightwave IFF
files as they were being rendered, worked just fine.
I was using Low Res mode, which I think writes the IFF file all at once. Maybe
thats why it worked?
Scott,
I have yet to play with Sentry… If you say it work fine with LW/IFFs
then perhaps the problem is with LW/FSs! See if framestores are the
problem. I would not think that resolution would do it. But as I said,
Rend 24 only uses IFFs so let us know what you find out.

Thanks for filling me in Russ. What if I added a script that waited for
the second file to show up and then load the first file? If we see the
file Pic002 then we know for sure that Pic001 is done, right?
I'm not quite sure how to this, any Arexx wizards have a coding clue?

If you are sure you know what the file name is going to be, you tell ARexx to
open it and loop (with a delay) until the return code indicates success. Then
you access the previous file in the series. There is the problem of the
possibility of the prior file not being successfully created so you may want to
activate the BREAK_C trap. Since the file you are testing in the loop should
not exist right away – say file image002, the loop continues because Open fails
until the host is finished processing image001.
Paul,
For what it's worth, LW1.0 used to leave the files open until the frame
was finished, then close 'em. That was bad, 'cause if you didn't let it
finish, it was difficult to get rid of the partial file. If you've still
got it around, it might be better with Sentry. Probably not worth the
effort.
It should work with lo-res and super-lo-res, as they are written with one
whack, but you can't do everything pixelized. ;^)
Gotta big drive? The scripts work OK on a batch of files that are already
done (Hey, you gotta sleep sometime!!!).

Got a big drive?
Hmmmmm…. I thought I was being nuts buying a 426 meg drive. I only
needed 80 megs. Guess what? All but 12 megs are full. How can this
happen?

Paul,
Maybe you should throw away some stuff, huh? I'm a packrat, too, but wow.
What IS all that stuff????
Happy rendering!

Paul,
Guess you put that Seagate to good use! Personally, mine is only half
full right now, but I have a Quantum 240 and a SyQuest 44 to back it up
🙂
Isn't having gobs of storage grand?

It is indeed. I like to keep things around "just in case".
I have 84 versions of a camcorder I did in Lightwave, and 134 versions of
texture maps for the buttons, and 37 versions of the animation, and 1,888
versions of… 🙂
My history file for Autopilot is, get this, 104 MEGS! I might do a prune
soon.
Yes- Having gobs of storage is indeed grand. (I also got a 220 meg Conner
:). Have you seen the new Tahiti 1 gigabyte removable cartridges 🙂
–Paul < Motorola Inside >
Paul, I have seen the Tahiti mechanism. Actually it is a Maxoptics
mechanism which is a subsidiary of Maxtor.
BTW, I am selling Tahiti carteidges. For you or anyone else interested,
they are selling for HALF price!
-Jonathan
Paul,
Have not seen the new Tahitis, but you can bet I'd love to have one.
Pretty much infinite storage.
Next aquisition might be a new 3.5" Syquest, or maybe a 150 MB Bernoulli.
I hear that the SyQuest is rather fast for removeable media…
