John, >> editing deck In a "typical" video editing suite … you have source decks and typically one "editing deck" for recording. If you only have one source deck and one record deck this is refered to a "cutss-only" editing system…. with 2 decks … they call that an A/B roll system. When you assemble a video, you would typically lay down timecode on the tape master (kind'a like formating the tape) and you would record the video from the source deck(s). This is typically done with what is called an "insert edit". This refers to the fact that the tape timecode and control track (the formatting information) which resides on the bottom edge of the tape will not be over written and therefore the original formatting will be preserved. Like when you write information to a formatted disk, the underlying format information remains, while the information changes. Also, each channel of audio and video can be recorded separately or together .. as you wish. The EVO-9650 has limitations in its ability to serve in this capacity … as a recorder in an editing suite. That is why its price is less than the AG-7750 and the JVC 822 .. these are true editing recorders as is the EVO-9850. The bottom line is that if you want the ability to expand (and you will), the EVO-9650 is not the best way to go. I'd get a real editing recorder. If you don't see yourself in the near to mid-term going beyond recording animations .. then the 9650 will be OK. Ang
