How many of you out there would be interested in an application/driver for
the Seikosha Smart Label Printer ?

I have often lusted after something like this. Is the Seikosha
functionally equivalent to the LabelWriter II or II Plus on the Mac (the
latter handles a larger roll and has a larger print head). Of course,
right now, anything is more than what we have.
Put me down for one.

I don't know about the Labelwriter II, the hardware I'm looking at is the
SLP 1000P SII Smart Label Printer by Seiko Instruments. The label size
1_1/8" x 3_1/2".
I'll keep you posted, won't be long.
What I have in mind is a pop up window that allows you to enter freeform
text or paste in text from the clipboard and then print it. So you could,
for example, type a letter in Final Copy, copy the name & address to the
clipboard, hit the hotkey to pop up the label printer window, paste in the
name & address and print a label.

Sounds sweet – I'd also be interested in the ability to send a longer
string of labels to the printer say from a database printing to a device
(for example, LAB:) or some other way to handle a number of labels at a
time.
What do the Seiko label printers go for now?

The printers sell for 189 pounds sterling, thats a bit high because they
come bundled with windows or mac software.

Will the label printer be Parallel or Serial? If parallel, then I
suppose an AB switch would be needed. And in my case an ABC switch, cause
my scanner is already on the parallel line with me laser.

The SLP is a serial device only. GVP's multi i/o card is excellent
value for money and gives you an extra parallel & two extra serial
ports. Do you have any problems with the A/B switch if you switch
from scanner to laser with the power on ? does the laser misbehave ?
No realy problems with the AB switch. The laser does not misbehave
– the software trying to talk to the laser however does hang if I
forget to switch before sending a file to the print.
The hand scanner however can not tolerate the switch in the A
postition (it is plugged into the B side). If I switch it with the
power on then the scanner stays on. I solve this problem by simply
pulling the power from the scanner interface. I only plug that in
when I use the thing.
The SLP does sound interesting. I'm going to have to go hunting
for a review. It's does sound like it is one of the lesser popular
label printers though. It's to bad you didn't get your hands on the
Avery model first – that one does seem to be everywhere and has a
company behind it that produces lots and lots of different kinds of
labels.

I have, of course, heard of Avery labels but never have never heard of a
dedicated label printer by Avery. Can YOU fill ME in ? :^)

I don't think so. The Smart Label Printer uses its own labels that come on
a roll.
The hardware is a dedicated label printer called the SLP 1000P SII by
Seiko Instruments, it is very small, the footprint is the equivalent of
two 3.5" floppies laid end to end. The label size is 1_1/8" x 3_1/2".
Anyway I'll keep you posted about the software.

I'm in the UK and we got ours from Inmac. Any reviews would be in the PC
press which I don't really read at present (? if ever ?).
If any Amigans out there have a Smart Label Printer I now have the
software ready to roll !

Perhaps you could upload an Info text file on this, with the price
etc…..or you could make it avaiable through CIS, there is an area were
software is sold when downloaded from CIS. Autopilot is available through
this means. The $$ is charged against the purchasers CIS account.
I just cant recall the "Forum" name for it…..

I would be very happy to upload info on the software but no one seems to
know what the Smart Label Printer is. I have had the software written
because we use these little (tiny) printers in the office everyday, they
are very useful but commercially they are only available to PC and Mac
users, I wanted to change that.
If anyone in the US/AUS/NZ can actually find one of these printers then I
will probably upload some info.

Then there is the LabelWriter II and II Plus mfgr by COSTAR, $184 & $245.
The II Plus can handle wider labels, like 3.5" diskette labels, shipping
labels and Video Cassette Front labels to name a few, than the II.

yes, I would be interested! I have been looking at that beast for a
long time and thinking about writing an ARexx for it. I use the
address program CONTACT and it would be no problem for it to support
the Seiko. I think the port connection is a good thing to look at –
in an office environment it would be ideal to have it connect to the
second joystick input – then a person would not need a multi-serial
card but I don't know if the game ports could support the label
printer. Someone on this thread asked about switching the paralell
port with the printer/scanner on – I've never had a problem with this
(of course I've been known to plug in the printer with the power on
as well!). If you are compiling a mailing list, leave me a message
