#Dos 6 and PC286

Has anyone attempted to use Dos 6.0 with GVP's PC286? I installed the dos
upgrade, only to find that some commands tend to "hang" at the prompt.
I've also noticed a lot of dos 6.0 problems in the MSDOS forum. Is dos 6.0
garbage or does it break under PC286?

I have C= 286BB, not the GVP product, however I found that when I upgraded
to DOS 5.0 many programs didn't work or work correctly. It was bad enough
that I went back to 3.3. Apparently, the BB DOS is customized for the BB.
Perhaps the GVP product has the same problems???

Andrew, I've long been using dos 5 with an xt bb (accellerated), and it
works fine. Os's may be customized, but dos 5's upgrade was intended to
deal with that.

My problem with DOS 5 was using the advanced features such as loading
dos HIGH and problems with TSR's. Programs like PCTools would lock up if
made resident. On the other hand, the database program I was using had no
problems and in fact benefitted from the extra memory.
When you say your XT is accellerated do you mean it is just a faster XT
or have you converted it to a 286. If it is still an XT then perhaps that
is why you haven't had any problems.
Also, I had one of the first DOS5 upgrades that where available here so
perhaps it had a few bugs in it still. When I called C= about it they
said that DOS5 wouldn't work correctly. From my experience they were
correct. Or perhaps it is simply the rev. of my BB…who knows?

I have a 386sx accellerator on my bb, but no hi ram.
PCTools has been known to have assorted problems when you try to do
anything interesting on a bb; ie run it as a tsr, etc.
DOS5 has been exceedingly well behaved on my setup.

Umm, what do you mean by an accelerator on your BB? Sounds interesting.

I have an xt bb. I added the Sota 386si, an 80386sx 16mhz accellerator.
Today, it's not cost effective if you can get a cheap 386bb, but a couple
years ago it really was. Its wierd in that I don't have any extended ram
but otherwise have a 386 system, though on an xt bus.

Possibly my problem is with my BB then. I did have problems when I first
got it with a serial card which errored out when d/l'ing. Like I said,
Dos5 worked with most normal programs but PCT & other TSRs would preform
unsatisfactorialy, except under DOS 3.3. I doesn't matter too much at
this point because most of my work is done on the Amiga side.

So you have the XT BB and it actually runs acceptably with the 386 chip?
The wonders never cease…:-) Does the accellerator us a slot or is it on
the board?

The 386si uses a slot and a cable to connect to the xt bb. It works
nicely. But note that pct doesn't like Janus all that much, and v7.1 will
not work as a tsr with Janus in my experience.

If you wanted extended RAM then I guess you'd have to get another card,
huh?
I never upgraded my version of PCT from 6.0. The advantages of v.7 didn't
seem worth the cost, especially since I only use the BB for one thing.

DOS 6 is a solid product. The VAST majority of problems I've read
about in the MSDOS Forum are user errors…either from mixing DOS 5 and
DOS 6 commands or from failing to read the instructions or follow the on
screen directions.
No idea of how the PC286 works with it.
