#GIF viewers?
23 messages in this thread
Is there such a thing as a reasonably fast and accurate GIF (all ages) viewer
for Amigas? Converting them to IFF is really not an acceptable alternative for
each GIF I want to see. I have ADPro and am not very impressed with the quality
of its conversions. Should I stick to my PC?
sign me "a lot disappointed lately with Amigas".

Try Imagemaster – it's alot better at creating IFF/Amiga mode images than
AdPro is.

Ben, I appreciate your unbiased <g> testimonial for IM's ability in creating
IFF/Amiga mode images. However, what I would really like is something quick,
easy and reasonably accurate to view GIF images without needing to convert
them. Then, if I like the GIF, I can take the time to convert it. Bill
If that's what you want to do, take a look at ViewTek. It can be used to
view your GIF files.

Actually, I wasn't really talking about output conversions – it is a
requirement to "convert" GIF's for normal Amiga display; and that's what I
was referring to. Imagemaster does that conversion on load; you don't have
to do anything other than pick the Amiga display mode you prefer to view
them in. And as you surmise, if you like what you see, you can render for
output.
Sorry if I confused you.

I dunno, I get pretty nice 12 color IFF's from 256-color GIFs. Most of
the time, that is. It just has to be a high quality image. And I may need
to tweek the balancing a little.
If I knew anyone using IM, I'd look at it.

12 color? You mean, 12-bit, I presume.
If you've got a few minutes for a download, you might want to take a look
at the sample image(s?… I forget – at least one) in DL6 of AmigaVendor.
That's a good way to see what Imagemaster can do with a full color image.
There are some 16 color shots in there I think you'll be pretty satisfied
with.

Ben,
Have you folks considered releasing a demo version that allows loading of
images with saves and manipualtions disabled?
Yes, we have. Here are the two problems that stop us: Imagemaster is
updated very, very often. So – if we up a demo version, we'll probably get
stuck uploading it constantly; that's costly in time and maintainance. The
other is that Imagemaster's main display screen can be saved; you get a
renderer for free too easily. Reminds of when people where using AdPro to
convert the HAM-E screen of Image Professional to a 24-bit file in AdPro
using the HAM-E support + screen grabbing – people will go to any length
to steal, unfortunately. Before anyone gets hot, I am NOT pointing any
fingers at ASDG; only certain end-user level thieves.

No, I meant 12-color.
If you want to use a picture as a backdrop on a 16-color screen, and want
to be able to tweek your workbench palette without lousing up the picture,
you can only use colors 4-15 (WB 2.04). I've got some scenic shots that
survived the transition fairly well.

Gads… I've forgotten the original question – I understand the issue
you're looking at, the "other" colors from teh WB set; what was it we were
talking about with regard to them?

I dunno…

Bill: If I remember right, you just purchased an Amiga 1200, correct? If
so, probably the best .GIF/.JPG viewer for you would be ViewTek, available
here in one of the AmigaArts libraries. It does a good job of viewing
GIFS, JPEG's, and IFF pics & animations and is very fast on my 4000, so it
should probably do well on a 1200. If you don't have a 1200 yet, then
ViewTek will still work, it just won't do as well viewing the GIFS/JPEGS
in regular Ham mode. ADPro does a fairly decent job of converting GIF's to
IFF so maybe you are not doing something to make the renderings look
decent.

The easiest way to view GIFs (If you have an AGA machine) is to get the GIF
data-type for MultiView. It is here as GIFDT.LZH or GIFDT.LHA. Then just
decompress it and copy the two files (the doc tells you where) to you system.
Then run MultiView, select your GIF file, and it is displayed. Easy!
Maybe for you, but the Gif.datatype package doesn't work on my 4000.
The GIF.datatype works fine on my 4000. I personally use ViewTek to
display GIFs rather than MultiView, but the GIF.datatype does work.
Okay, I'll ask another stupid question: Could the diagonal-tearing
I get be caused by the fact that I run (pretty exclusively) in
Double-NTSC mode? (The few owners of A4000s I know usually run
Productivity Mode.)
Not too likely as I run (pretty exclusively) in DBLNTSC.
It doesn't? That's odd… it works just fine on my 4000. I use it
quite often, actually.
I think you left this to the wrong person Dave. But ViewTek is the best way to
view .GIF's, IMHO. Works very well with my 4000, and the .GIF datatype method
is slower.

I've displayed GIFs using both ViewTek and MultiView. I did not
notice a speed difference, neither seemed slow, but I wasn't timing
them. My pref- erence is to go with the built-in MultiView. I sure
don't have anything bad to say about ViewTek, but MultiView is a
'standard' option. Does ViewTek have more capabilities than
MultiView?
Along with ViewTek's capability to display GIF's, it will also display
24-bit JPEG files directly. And then there is the Anim-5 & Anim-7
support, plus the capability to do a screen grab. Don't get me wrong,
I think datatypes are a great addition to the Amiga OS, and MultiView
does a pretty good job with most files. But ViewTek is what I prefer
for viewing most files and I'm sure others have their own preference.
Bill,
Try Hamlab. I believe there is a demo in the library here that will
view but not save. While it does not have all the bells and whistles of
AdPro/IM/ImageFX it is a h@LL of a lot faster.
