FWIW, today I bought a copy of Microsoft's new CD-ROM Cinemania.
It was $56.99 at Biz-Mart in Salt Lake City.
It is one of the 3 or 4 CD-ROMs I've bought (out of 50-60) that was worth
the price. Actually, worth five or six times the price. I've already
learned useful information about several movies I've seen and identified
several videotapes to get next time the family goes to Blockbuster.
The product is GREAT and good value!

Agree 100 percent. Cinemania is the single most-used of the 50-odd CD-ROM
disks lying around here. Everyone who visits wants to "check that one
movie" and ends up hogging one of the PCs for ages. For anyone even vaguely
interested in the movies, its IMHO a "must buy."

Yes, and it's missing a few people. I wanted to find a biography on GABBY
HAYES and found none (although I did find him as a cast member in Roy
Rogers films). But then I found there was NO reference to Helen Hayes!
Anyone else find notable omissions besides me?
I agree. I can't beleive how neat this cheap program is! The ultimate
program for the movie freak. I just got it today and spent more than an
hour just browsing around.
Richard, I got a copy of Cinemania for Christmas. Haven't used it since
I'm waiting on Toshiba to ship their 3401 drive so that I have the hardware
to use it.
I did notice, however, that the CD is already down level. Maltin's 1993
book is in the book stores, but the Cinemania CD is based on his 1992 book.
I bought mine at Egghead for less tha $40.00 and the sales rep there said I
could swap it in on an updated version if one arrives in the next month or
so. But he didn't know anything about any update.
I've not opened the box or registered my copy since I may "swap" it. Does
the info inside say anything about updates, and have you heard anything
about a 1993 version?

Bill, I have just jad a quick look through the Cinemania package. The only
relevant item I could find is a little boxed item on page 3, headlined
"Important Update Information." It reads:
"Cinemania is updated regularly to keep the information as current and
accurate as possible. To be notified when updates are available, send in
the registration card included in your Cinemania package. As a registered
owner, you will receive special prices for future versions of Cinemania."
If Maltin's new book is now out, I suppose the '93 version of Cinemania
cannot be too far behind. Should you crack the current package? I would –
the '93 version could easily be 3 to 6 months away!

Give us a run-down on just what Cinemania tells you, Richard. I mean,
title (of course), date (re-release also if applicable), run length, stars,
studio, type (adventure, sci-fi, drama, horror, action, etcetera), number
of tapes (if more than one), ratings (two star, three star, not-rated,
etcetera), censor/maturity rating of content (G, PG, PG-13, not-rated,
etcetera), scenario/plot description, studio, sales (boxoffice success and
otherwise), writer, etcetera??

PS: Hmmm, my Computer City catalog lists Cinemania at only $56.95. How can
something that cheap, especially being offered by Microsoft, do a great job
of cataloging anything?
Is has to be the bargain of the year or maybe, just maybe the glimpse of
things to come – excellent software at low prices. It has everything from
demographics, ratings,(no comment on VHS or Laser editions), writers,
directors, all cross indexed with a seach thread, ability to create several
personl lists.
Let me jump on the Cinemania bandwagon! I collect laserdisks and I find
Cinemania a great resource to evaluate potential purchases as well as get
information on movies I already own. As I begin the task of cataloging my
video library, Cinemania will provide excellent information. It really IS a
great buy for the money you spend!

Yes it does. I is an MPC application and uses Windows 3.1 exclusively I
believe.

Roger, you got it correct. Cinemania uses Microsoft Windows 3.1 Miltimedia
extensions. It is definately Windows and will give your system a run for
its money. It is very resource hungry. For instance, it insists on 256
color VGA, certain sound drivers for the WAV files and a good fast CD ROM.
