#8 meg chip ram

When I got my 4000 it only worked for a short time,when I got the replacement
board and was checking it out I saw a very interesting little jumper. It had
three notes next to it.One said 2M,one said 8M, then the good part, it said
CHIP RAM next to it.Does anybody have any ideas ?(8 meg sim + change the jumper
?) There is room where the chip simm is ,it currently uses 256 chips,with 4meg
chips it could be a 8 meg simm.
How about it COMMODORE ? When can I get the 8 meg simm ?

That was a "plan for possible future expansion". There are no current
AA chips that will handle more than 2 megs of Chip RAM. This was explained
at the World of Amiga release of the 4000 last fall.

Why put the jumper if everything is surface mounted.You can't just remove a
chip and install another without risk of damage to the board.There also was a
wire being used to jump between pins on a chip ,I think it was the "Buster"
chip.Do you know why that was done ? Any how Thanks Clint

I don't know the actual reasons for why they did things the way they
did, I just know that they said that in spite of the fact that there was
an 8meg selection on the board that only 2 meg parts were available.

I am speculating that the AA+ chip set will allow the user to access
more chip RAM. If I'm not mistaken, the current AA chipset is
surface-mounted to the A4000's motherboard via PLCCs (plastic
leadless/ed chip carriers). This means that with a special chip
puller, the user will be able to upgrade to a new chipset which has
the ability to use the jumper.

That's likely to be true. I take it to be a good sign that C= is
planning ahead.

I dunno about that. C= has made no promises that any current machine will
be compatible with an AAA (or whatever they decide to call it) chipset.
Hope I'm wrong, but I bet AAA will require a whole new machine.

It depends. Chips can be surface mounted and still be easily
upgradable. That is what the PLCC (Plastic Leadless Chip Carrier) is
for. The actual chip isn't soldered to the motherboard; the socket
is (surface mounted, that is).
