Does anyone know of a variable-size rebootable ram device that works under
3.0? I tried vdk, but had a few wierd crashes even though it worked as
far as recoverability. I know RAD: is recoverable, but it has a fixed
size, unlike RAM: unless something's changed that I don't know about.

I have asdg's vd0: recoverable ram on my A1200 — haven't tried
rebooting from it, but it seems to function just fine as fast temporary
storage. I remember several years ago having to try several versions of
vd0: to get one that worked right. I'll play with it a bit this week, and
if it seems 100 per cent, and you want, I'll try to upload an archive of
the bits and pieces….

I remember that VD0: quit working at version 2.0. Weird, unpredictable
lockups. Please check it out _thoroughly_ on you 1200 and let me know if it
really works!
VD0: has been on my A1200 for 6 weeks or so, and has not (as far as
I can tell) been responsible for any unhappy events whatsoever. Now,
I don't move any startup stuff over to it and use it as a fast
rebooter (the A1200 is so quick to boot-up/re-boot with a harddrive,
and so seldom crashes to need re-booting that it just didn't seem
worth the effort or time to set it up to re-boot) so I can't give it
a 100% clean bill of health. But as a recoverable RAM disk, it's as
good as it ever was…
Early on (even before WB2) I had trouble with some versions of VD0:
and had to find the original (FF#58). When WB2 came out, I got a
newer version of the program portion that goes in DEVS: called
vdisk.device, here on CIS. That combo (old mountlist entry modified
to name vdisk.device, and new vdisk.device in DEVS: ) with "mount
vd0:" and "cd vd0:" in my user-startup script seems to work just fine
for me.
I haven't searched the CIS files for the vdisk.device program, so
it may be here, but if it isn't, I think I can pack it up with LZ and
upload it if you want. Ditto the version of asdg-rrd that worked for
me.

Hey, I just put VD0: on my system — A2000HD with 25 mhz '030
accelerator and Workbench 2.1. It works flawlessly. The
ASDG.VDISK.DEVICE I'm using is dated 7/22/91 and is 6040 bytes. I put
it in my devs drawer, edited my mountlist to include a VD0:
configuration with the suggested BUFMEMTYPE and HIGHCYL lines for my
hardware, and added two lines to my USER-STARTUP:
C:MOUNT VD0: CD VD0: [seems to help to get it recognized quickly
during bootup]
I'm using it with Autopilot to store temp files and message packets.
I've junked RAD:, because it doesn't dynamically allocate memory like
VD0:.
