Patrick…Some CD-ROM drives require you to put the CD into a special case that is then inserted into the drive. The caddy has a shutter that opens when you put it in. The reason is apparently to make it easier to fit the drive into a standard 5.25" drive bay. Street prices are under $5 but the good side is that the caddies keep the disk cleaner since the disk is only exposed while it's in the drive. I just bought a Texel drive which uses caddies and it's no problem (except for all the empty CD jewell cases.) 🙂 Be seeing you. -Larry
