#Kodak CD Capabilities

I went into a photohop today, and I was pretty impressed with the Kodak CD demo
I saw.
Can anybody answer these questions?
1. Can a Kodak CD be read by my Mitsui CD-ROM drive? Is there any
software available to help? Can I import the photos inot CorelPaint etc.?
2. Can I buy a CD WORM drive to write photo-images to a Kodak CD? (I
presume that the Kodak CD is a WORM device)
3. If "2" above is possible, can I then get ordinary 35mm slides made up
from the resulting Kodak CD?

Okay, one at a time….
I don't know the Mitsui. If it says XA anywhere, it's Kodak CD compatible.
It it doesn't, it may be single session compatible but not multisession
compatible (i.e. it might be able to read everything laid down in one pass but
not anything added later in the empty areas). Firmware (meaning a chip) is
required for XA, so if you don't have it you can't get it in software.
Draw3's package isn't fully Kodak compatible, but the forthcoming Corel
Draw 4 is in all the add-ons, even Mosaic.
The Kodak CD WORM (or writable CD) recorder is the same as the one sold by
Phillips and is available at the very un-consumer price of around $7000. It
ain't cheap, since Phillips, co-developer and royalty-gatherer of the CD
format, doesn't like the idea of anybody being able to make CDs that any other
CD can play, so it's "professionally priced" and will likely stay high for the
foreseeable future.

One difference. The Kodak PCD writer 200 has a bar code reader that reads the
bar code on Kodak Photo CD Portfolio discs. This is required to use the coming
Kodak Photo CD Portfolio authoring software.

Whether a drive says XA or not has nothing to do with whether it's multisession
or not. Multisession and XA are two entirely seperate things. Some people
tend to link them together because PhotoCD is the first popular XA application
and the first popular multisession application. However, an XA drive does not
have to support multisession, nor does a multisession drive have to support XA
(although most do).
Also, remember that being PhotoCD compatible does not mean being XA compatible.
PhotoCD only uses a subset of the XA feature set.
Brian, re your inquiry about Kodak photo-cd. You say your drive is a Mitsui,
could it be a Mitsumi? If it is, could it be a 5S?
If so, your machine is Kodak multisession according to Kodak. Hope that helps a

Yes it is a Mitsumi drive! Easy mistake to make when there is no manufacturer
name on the spec. booklet, or on the drive! I had to look in the PC Mag. I saw
the advert in!
I don't know if it is the 5S model. It only cost me 159 pounds sterling (appx.
$225).
Is there any software available to read the Kodak photo-CD's if I have one made
up?

Brian — Your drive is probably a LU005s if you got it within the last few
months. Yhe easy way to find out is to look at the interface card — 8 bit is
the older drive, 16 bit is the 5s. Also — the model # is on the bottom of the
drive. Kodak sells software to read their photo discs (about $40-50),
mathematica sells Tempra Access ($20-30), and I think Corel Draw also includes
the drivers for Koday photos.

this mean I have the 5S?

Get as much information as you can about your CD-ROM drive and leave a message
with your questions for Joel White. Joel is in our technical support area and
can tell you if your drive is Photo CD compatible. His CIS ID is 71333,727.

on the left side of all Mitsumi drives there's a Compact Disc logo. If you can
feel it with your finger it's a LU005S. The LU002S has the logo printed on the
plane panel.
The MTMCDD.SYS version for the LU005S is >=2.0, for the LU002S <=1.5.

Brian — Yes to both your questions. You do have the 5s, and you can read
Kodak photo discs — both single and multisession.

It sounds as if you have the same drive as me, ie. the Mitsumi that is selling
cheaply here in the UK at the moment. If so I can confirm that it reads Photo
CD, because I'm doing that. UK Flex, from whom I bought it, say that it is
multi-session, and I will be able to confirm that next week if you like as I
have just sent in a film to be added to my existing CD.

What s/w are you using to read the photos? I have CorelPaint v3.0ba – does
that read Photo CD's?

If I may jump in … Using Corel is a two-step process. You must use Corel
Mosaic to read the Photo CD. Once you have selected the image from Mosaic, you
must save it to another format, ie. BMP or PCX. Then you can use PhotoPaint to
work with the photo. I hope this is helpful.

Many of the higher-end graphics packages (like CorelDraw) provide Kodak
viewers, but you can also order inexpensive software (I believe it's called
Kodak Access) directly from Kodak. Somebody from Kodak here will probably be
able to tell you where it can be ordered in Britain (it's available from a toll
free order number in the US as well as via software mail order houses) and how
much it is, but the U.S. price for the basic software is under US $30, or about
20 pounds.
Brian, I didn't know you were across the pond. It *seems* to me (from the
price) that you likely have an older model Mitsumi drive. The newer 5S has a
low selling price of about $200 U.S. in the U.S. and I would expect it to be
more than the equivilent of $225 in "the old country."
Perhaps someone from over-there can jump in with additional info. Or you could
try to look at the serial number area which should give you the model number.
*IF* it is the older model then Kodak does not list it as compatible as far as
I can tell and so the whole question becomes moot — you won't be able to use
photo cd.
Again, I hope someone else will jump in here with more info and perhaps a
